UEFA Champions League: Liverpool vs. Glasgow Rangers Preview, Odds, Prediction

October 1, 2022 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Liverpool meets with the Glasgow Rangers in the all-British UEFA Champions League derby. The Reds once again disappointed, failing to beat Brighton at home on Saturday afternoon. The Rangers, meanwhile, posted a confident win on the road against Hearts, and their fans are hoping that the period of poor games is behind. Liverpool is in a tough position, oscillating a lot, looking pale and without stability in defense. The Reds have no other option in this event but to attack from the first moment and post a win over the guests from Scotland.

Preview

Liverpool (-700) was down 0-2 against the Seagulls and then came back, flipping the result in the second half, only to waste the lead and a fantastic effort by allowing Brighton to level the score at 3-3. The Reds’ defense was once more terrible, making errors that much cheaper units wouldn’t allow.

Jurgen Klopp’s crew has just two clean sheets since the start of the campaign, which tells a lot about the state of Liverpool’s back line. It is no wonder why this crew has just three wins across all the competitions this year.

Yet, the Reds’ games are efficient, with only one in the previous seven finishing without three goals. Also, seven of nine concluded with both teams netting.

Glasgow Rangers (+1200) improved morale with a confident, 0-4 win over Hearts on the road. It was the second in a row for the Gers, who previously beat Dundee United 2-1 at home.

But before all this, the Scottish powerhouse lost three contests in a row, being smashed in all of them. At first, Celtic trashed them 4-0 in the Old Firm Derby, before losing to ajax in Amsterdam with the same result and Napoli at home, 0-3.

Those games clearly showed the difference between the Gers and top European teams. Even though they managed to eliminate PSV and reach the UCL group stage, they aren’t competitive when facing the big dogs. We just want to say that only one of the last 10 games Rangers played didn’t see three or more goals.

Latest News

Konate is out, and that is a big blow for Klopp. Andy Robertson is injured as well, the same as Curtis Jones and Oxlade-Chamberlain. Naby Keita is OK, but he lacks match fitness and his status for Tuesday is unknown.

Hagi, Helander, Ofoborh, Lawrence, and Souttar are all out for various health reasons.

Head to Head

Apart from a friendly game in 2011, when Rangers beat Liverpool, 1-0, we couldn’t find any meetings between these two teams. It is astonishing that they have never officially met, knowing their rich history and background.

Prediction

This is do or die for the Reds, who have to win. Otherwise, the situation would become extremely problematic and complicated for them. The slip against Brighton did a lot of damage in the English Premier League, and a similar thing here would hurt Liverpool’s European plans. That’s why we bet on the hosts’ confident victory, by two or more goals. For those who search for big profits, Liverpool scoring two or more goals in the first half seems good.

Pick: Liverpool -1.5 -300

  • Inter Milan vs. Barcelona
  • Marseille vs. Sporting Lisbon
  • Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Tottenham Hotspur
  • Chelsea vs. AC Milan
  • RB Leipzig vs. Celtic
