Champions League Round of 16: RB Leipzig vs. Manchester City Preview, Odds, Prediction

February 18, 2023 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

RB Leipzig hosts Manchester City in the opening game of their Round of 16 matchups. These two sides have met once in the UEFA Champions League, and both have won a game each. The Citizens are absolute favorites coming into this event, even though the Bulls have played solid football over the past few weeks. Though, City slipped this weekend, not winning in Nottingham and allowing Arsenal to regain its edge in the standings once again. On the other side, RB is close to the top of the Bundesliga, but wants to have a significant impact on the most prominent European club competition.

RB Leipzig vs. Manchester City Preview

RB Leipzig (+333) wiped the floor with Wolfsburg on the road, 0-3, presenting one of their best performances since the New Year, and there had been a few excellent since then. After failing to win in back-to-back events vs. Koln away from home, 0-0 and at home to Union, 1-2 the Bulls bounced back.

The fact that RB missed a few chances to break out at the top of the Bundesliga standings did demoralize them a little, but Wolfsburg’s triumph reenergized this crew.

Five of the recent six games this club played all saw over 2.5 scores, while four in seven ended with both teams netting. The Bulls play open and efficient football, focusing on transition and hard and quick counter-attacks.

Instead of winning and keeping the pressure on Arsenal, Manchester City (-125) played just 1-1 in Nottingham against Forest and again fell behind the Gunners, whom they had beaten three days earlier. Additionally, Arsenal has a game in hand that might be very valuable.

The inconsistency in the back line is problematic for Guardiola and his boys because Man City allowed at least one goal in the previous four events and seven times in the past eight contests.

City isn’t confident away from home at all, with just one win in the previous five outings, which is something just a few noticed. After three losses in a row, they’ve beat Arsenal before a draw in Nottingham. We have to admit the Citizens frequently show glitches that hadn’t been seen in the past.

RB Leipzig vs. Manchester City Latest News

Halstenberg, Diallo, Gulasci and Olmo are all injured and unavailable for the hosts.

Mendy and Stones will be out for the Citizens and those are the only guys who won’t play in Germany.

RB Leipzig vs. Manchester City Head to Head Games

The two units met in the UEFA Champions League group stage back in 2021, and after smashing the Etihad, 6-3, Man City lost in Germany at the Red Bull Arena, 2-1.

RB Leipzig vs. Manchester City Prediction

We can’t be sure about City’s defense, but we can be pretty confident in this team’s attack. Haaland is bound to wake up and start pounding after a few mediocre games. RB is aggressive at home regardless of the rivals, which should result in high efficiency, especially because City’s displays away from the Etihad aren’t as convincing as in the past. Our first pick would be over 2.5 goals, at the odds set at -125, while the second is over 1.5 goals in the second 45 minutes, with the odds on that at -110.

Pick: Over 2.5 goals -125
