The Kyrie Irving Case

February 8, 2019 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

The Celtics fans are a bit frightened. Kyrie’s phrases regarding his willingness to stay in Boston are much weaker than before. From “I am staying long-term” to “I might stay.” And that is something which terrifies every true Celtics’ fan.

Especially after the game with the Knicks, at Madison, earlier this month. “We want Kyrie, we want Kyrie” Knicks fans cheered and triggered an enormous amount of speculations about playmaker’s future, which is not that clear anymore.

Knicks already failed to land him once. For such a huge franchise, to be unsuccessful twice would be a great surprise.

But Danny Ainge tried to ease the things today, stating that Irving’s situation is the same and that he believes that the player will sign a contract on at the start of the free agency.

He compared the current relationship between Irving and the organization, like an engagement.

“The way I viewed the situation is that I think a lot of people, because of Kyrie’s announcement at the beginning of the year, thought that it was a marriage,” Ainge said, “And I think that it’s more like an engagement. And we’re going to get married on July 1st. I think that engagement is still on, as far as I know.”

The ending of the sentence “as far as I know” is definitely something the fans didn’t want to hear.

Irving wasn’t keen on what the fans at the Garden did, and it seems that at the moment, he feels very uncomfortable speaking about his future.

Before the game with the Knicks, Irving told the media to “ask him about his plans on July 1st.” That is what caused for euphoria among all the fans in the Big Apple.

After the contest, he told the reporters, that everything which happened that night among the fans was nothing but a distraction and that he doesn’t want to talk about it.

“It’s nothing but a distraction at this point,” he said.

Uncle Drew intends to see how things develop in the postseason. If Celtics have a good run, he might stay. Otherwise, it would be a huge question. The prospects of playing with Kevin Durant and possibly Zion Williamson are very, very tempting, especially in New York.

Celtics wanted to stop Irving from even considering to leave, by securing Anthony Davis’ arrival in Massachusetts. The franchise reportedly offered among other players Jason Tatum and Marcus Smart to the Pelicans along with a bunch of picks.

New Orleans denied that offer because they want to wait until the end of the season to start negotiating with the potential partners. Also, the Celtics have a problem with the rule which prevents Davis’ landing until Irving becomes a free-agent, which is on July the 1st.

So, for now, New York and Boston are the first two options for former No.1 pick. But there is one other team who stands aside and monitors every superstar in the league.

The Los Angeles Lakers.

We witnessed that Kyrie recently stated that he apologized to LeBron for his previous behavior when forcing a trade outside Cleveland.

“I had to call ‘Bron, and tell him I apologize for being that young player that wanted everything at his fingertips,” the player stated on January the 16th. “I wanted to be the guy that led us to a championship. I wanted to be the leader. I wanted to be all that.”

In the following days, the two former teammates had an intensive conversation on the social networks, which heated all the rumors about the reunion of a big duo.

Anthony Davis was in the focus of the attention, and that quickly overshadowed everything, but we didn’t forget about it. It wouldn’t be such a huge surprise to see Kyrie jumping from East to West coast. The Lakers have all the necessary conditions to make that scenario possible.

Keep an eye on that.

And waith for the 1st of July.
