Jerry Jones: “I’m More Enthusiastic Than 30 Years Ago”

February 25, 2019 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

For every Dallas Cowboys’ fan, this date is not an ordinary one. It marks a day when Jerry Jones bought what was at the time just another NFL franchise. A bit better than other ones, as they had two Super Bowls, but nothing special.

Thirty years after, they are the most famous, the most intriguing and by far the most expensive sports franchise in the world. The fans of other sports organizations might be a bit insulted, but that is the truth.

What was forgotten after their second Super Bowl, when they got the nickname America’s Team, was completely revived under Jones leadership, and it still lasts now.

The 76-year old owner of the Cowboys is looking enthusiastic as ever and has big plans for the future, especially after this season, and the rise of his team.

He was a bit mysterious while talking with the reporters a couple of days ago, and didn’t want to reveal the “strategies” as he said, but Jones indicated, that he and the rest of the executives have a long-term plan about this generation.

“We’ve got a holistic thing that we are looking at relative to — and holistic being this year, next year and, if you will, even into the third year — today,” Jones said.

With Dak Prescott on board, Ezekiel Elliot, Amari Cooper, Cole Beasley and many more, this team could have a really bright future. Their ceiling is unknown for now, and judging by the way they play, Super Bowl is not far away.

Because of that, Jones wants to keep this crew together and his intentions on how to do that can’t be revealed.

But during the other part of the interview, which was about his 30 years on the head of the Cowboys, Jones was more straightforward. He didn’t hesitate to be honest and tell the journalists how he feels.

“I haven’t worked a day in 30 years,” Jones said, meaning that he loves his role, and that he doesn’t see it as some kind of work, but instead as a pleasure.

“It’s been that kind of experience. Every day has been a growing experience. The NFL and the Dallas Cowboys made me something I wouldn’t have been. It’s like a walk-on.”

Back on 25th of February 1989, Jones bought the Cowboys from H.R. Bright who wanted to get rid of the franchise after five years of being in charge there. He had significant losses after the collapse of the First Republic Bank Corporation, and Jones offer of $140 million came in the best possible moment for both.

After that, he made a lot of unpopular and unbelievable moves at that time, like firing Tom Landry from the position of the head coach, or doing the same with Tex Schramm who was Cowboys manager at the time.

Most of the people saw Jones as one wild and not so smart guy with a lot of money, who wants to show off with an NFL franchise. They couldn’t be more wrong.

Three years later the first Super Bowl came, the next year also, two years after that another one. And the legend of Jerry Jones was born.

He spoke about how he made all that, and what is the key factor in the whole equation.

“My lesson here if there is one, if you can get in something that just peaks your imagination every day then you can grow with it,” the icon of Cowboys fans stated.

He also mentioned all the people who were not in the first plan, and the ones who really made him motivated to work and to improve his organization, the ones who are cornerstones of the Cowboys.

“I have always thanked all the people that have contributed — from ticket holders to suite holders to the sponsors. Every time Michael Irvin caught the ball I would tell them you are as important as Michael catching a pass. That is how we put them to put this show on.”

It is a nice way of giving credit to someone, when you compare him to the NFL Hall of Famer and one of the best evert wide receivers.

Despite his age, Jones isn’t willing to slow down. It appears that the youth of the current Cowboys franchise made him more energetic, and he said that despite his age, he feels much better than when he bought the team.

“I am more enthusiastic sitting here today than I was 30 years ago.”
