Mark Cuban: “All the Credit to Jeanie Buss”

June 6, 2019 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Mark Cuban is one of the guys who is constantly shocking people all around the world. Whether is that because of his behavior, or his statements, the Dallas Mavericks owner often attracts a lot of publicity.

Throughout this season, Cuban was a bit quieter than usual, and when the majority of NBA fans thought that he settled down, the 63-year old jumped back on the stage.

During his participation at the Social Innovation Summit in LA, Cuban was asked to comment Lakers’ recent struggles. And he did have an interesting answer.

“The more screwed up they are, the happier I am,” he said.

Well, to be honest, it was something in his style. Though he did add that he feels like that about any other team in the league, not only about the Lakers.

“But I feel that way about every other franchise not in Dallas. We all go through it. Every franchise goes through cycles, and when your down cycle hits you, it’s never fun.”

Cuban also spoke about the situation in LA regarding the recent turmoils in the franchise. He was very supportive towards Jeanie Buss, praising the Lakers’ controlling owner. Cuban had nothing but kind words about her, saying that Buss deserves credit because of making all the decisions and not allowing anybody to interfere.

“So, Jeanie had to balance all that, and that’s a credit to her that she made her decisions. She stuck by them, and she made the tough calls. So, Jeanie gets all the credit in the world.”

Buss has been in a difficult position according to Mavericks’ owner because she needs to balance between the family and business, which is one of the hardest things to do. Cuban, a father of three, understands that because he too might be in a similar situation in a couple of years.

He didn’t hesitate to talk about that either, admitting that at some point in the near future he will have to make the same decisions.

“So there will be a time when my kids [take over], or not my kids, and I have to make a decision on how to integrate my family and who takes on what role, and that’s not going to be easy.”

Cuban stated that all the hype about the Lakers is easy to understand. With LeBron in the middle, huge expectations, and the greatness of the franchise, that is just the way it goes.

“That’s just the nature of the beast,” Cuban was direct. “If certain players weren’t at the Lakers, you wouldn’t be having those same conversations.”

At the moment, the Mavs and the Lakers are in a similar situation, both beneath the playoff zone, and with a team in the making. But the thing is that the Mavs are looking much healthier than their rivals from LA.

Cuban has more reasons to be happy than Buss, because the moves his franchise made, are giving much better results than the Lakers’. Drafting Luka Doncic turned out to be a jackpot, and the Mavs got a guy who will dominate the league in the next decade. If they didn’t decide to trade for Kristaps Porzingis in the middle of the season, the team might have even reached the playoffs.

Coach Rick Carlisle knows how to win a championship, and there is no doubt that he will properly develop the team. With one or two additions to the crew he already has, we might see the Mavs among the top teams in the league pretty soon.

On the other side, the Lakers are struggling, and their future is uncertain despite having the best player in the world on the roster. The chemistry is pretty bad, and it appears that the whole project with LBJ and chasing the title could turn out to be a huge bust. Unlike the with the Mavs, the time is not working in their favor.
