Liverpool Defeats Leicester After a Controversial Penalty, 2-1

October 5, 2019 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Liverpool continued its perfect streak, surviving against Leicester City at Anfield today. The Reds defeated the Foxes 2-1, after a penalty in the injury time. Though, we need to say that the decision of the referee Chris Kavanagh was highly controversial.

Sadio Mane fell in the box, after contact with Marc Albrighton. The Senegalese player did fell easily, but Albrighton’s reaction too was utterly amateurish. Instead of clearing the ball outside the box, he waited and deceived his goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, allowing Mane to reach the ball first.

The ref did check the VAR, and it was his opinion to confirm his initial decision. After that, James Milner used his opportunity to bring three points to the Reds, who now have eight straight wins since the campaign started.

“Practice is what you need in those moments. You have to just concentrate and stay calm,” Milner said, following the game. “I was just trying to concentrate. As long as you stay at the moment, then you will be fine. Anytime it’s in the last minutes, it is important.”

The contest was very tight, with not so many chances. Liverpool controlled most of the match, and they had several opportunities, while on the other hand, Leicester scored from the first dangerous shot on Adrian’s goal. Sadio Mane broke the lock of the guests in the 40th minute. The reigning European champs had several situations in which they could have sealed this event, but strangely, their execution wasn’t at the usual level.

James Maddison leveled the score in the 80th minute, and when the majority of the spectators at Anfield thought that a draw would stop their superb start. Eventually, their 8th win is the first time for Liverpool to start the championship with eight victories since 1990.

Jurgen Klopp was satisfied with the performance of his players. The German also said that the game, in general, was very exciting.

“It was a super game. We upped the tempo. The football we played was so important today. Leicester’s goal really stopped us, but then we wanted to go forward.”

In other matches this Saturday, Brunely defeated Everton with 1-0, with Jeff Hendrick scoring the only goal of the game in the 72nd minute. It was a classical Burnley’s win, fought after a hard and tough battle, in which the spectators couldn’t see too many chances.

Norwich suffered a massive humiliation at home against Aston Villa. It was a pretty odd game in which both sides had an equal number of shots, and in which the Canaries had more possession of the ball. Yet, the final result was 1-5 for the guests from Birmingham.

Watford and Sheffield United played a dull game without goals, while earlier today, Brighton demolished the shaken Tottenham with 3-0.

It was another sorry game for the Spurs, who are obviously in a knockdown. It seems that the chemistry of the team is gone, and according to some sources, the problems in the locker room broke out between some of the players. The Seagulls used that and opened the match in the third minute through Neal Maupay, and Aaron Connolly scored twice after that to sink the guests.

Mauricio Pochettino is under heavy pressure right now, as his job is not safe anymore. But the Argentinian isn’t worried about that.

“No, I am not worried; what worries me is life, not football.”

There are four more games tomorrow, and the derby of the round is between Man City and Wolverhampton. Southampton awaits Chelsea, Arsenal hosts Bournemouth, while Man United travels to Newcastle.
