Watson, Texans Beat Mahomes, Chiefs on the Road, 31-24

In the most hyped game of the entire weekend and the clash of the two most talented quarterbacks in the league, according to many, DeShaun Watson and his Houston Texans have defeated the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes. It was 31-24 for Houston at the Arrowhead Stadium, in a match in which the guests had a perfect tactic for the reigning MVP and his crew.

The Texans limited Mahomes’ time on the court, and the Chiefs’ attack had the ball just a little bit more than 20 minutes. On the other side, Houston’s offensive plays lasted for almost 40 minutes, which was eventually a winning combination for Bill O’Brien’s unit.

Mahomes had two turnovers in this one. At first, Tashaun Gipson picked up his pass early on into the second period. Then, with 32 seconds to go until the halftime, Charles Omenihu sacked KC’s quarterback, who fumbled the ball with Benardrick McKinney recovering it for the Texans.

In those moments, the Chiefs lead started to melt, and the Texans turned the roles on the field. Following an excellent opening and a 17-3 lead in the first period, Kansas City just stiffed into the second period and allowed for the guest to score 20 unanswered points.

Furthermore, the home team had a chance to stop the rival’s surge, when Juan Thornhill intercepted Watson’s pass in the endzone. But Mahomes fumbled the ball immediately after. The punishment came right away, and from being up one point, 17-16, the Chiefs were heading for a break trailing with 23-17.

For one brief moment, Tyreek Hill brought the hosts ahead, but it was Watson who rushed for one yard with 6:17 left until the end, erasing all that. Texans then went for a two-point conversion completed by DeAndre Hopkins, to secure at least a solid chance for the overtime. Their defense did an excellent job of stopping Mahomes twice, including the attack which followed after Watson’s second intercepted pass. He ended the game with only one touchdown toss and 280 yards with two interceptions but added two rushing TDs. Watson now has 5 of them on the ground and is tied fourth in the league.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to be able to deal with all the adversity and the up and down and flow of the game and to be able to fight for 60 minutes,” Watson said. “That’s what we did. We kept fighting and kept pushing and kept encouraging.

Carlos Hyde was an unstoppable force on the field. Texans’ running back was the one who destroyed the Chiefs’ defense in the crucial moments, and he alone won first downs in almost all of the important snaps. He would end the game with 116 rushing yards on 26 carries. Darren Fells had 6 catches for 69 yards, while DeAndre Hopkins had 9 for 55.

“It was big for him to come in here and do what he did,” Watson said about Hyde.

On the other side, Mahomes threw 273 yards, 19 of 35, for three TDs and a pick. Two of his TD passes were towards Tyreek Hill, who had 80 yards on 5 carries. Damien Williams added another one.

“It was good to have him back,”Mahomes said of Hill. “He played well today. He’ll keep getting more and more back in the offense as we keep getting him back.”

Kansas City now has a very important match on Thursday night, when they face Broncos at the Mile High. It is a divisional match that might influence the final standings a lot.

The Texans also have a divisional clash against the Colts on the road.
