Liverpool Wins Again, Reds Conquer Tottenham and Mourinho 1-0

January 11, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Once again, Liverpool showcased that they don’t have a match in the English Premier League by beating Tottenham today, 0-1.

The Reds continued their rampaging quest towards the Premier League title, with another win over one of their biggest rivals. At the moment, they have 16 points more than Leicester City and 17 more than Manchester City. Also, Klopp’s guys are unbeaten for 38 straight Premiership games. It is the new club record which eclipsed the old one set in 1984.

The European champs became the first side in any of the top five European leagues to win 20 of its 21 opening games.

But, this was one of those rare games in which we saw the Reds fighting for their lives. It happened in the final stage of the game, once Tottenham started pressuring the guests from Anfield, managing to miss a couple of fantastic chances.

The best one was when Son sent the ball wide off the mark from some 10 yards with no one in front of him but Alisson.

“In the end we made hard work of it,” said Jordan Henderson. “That can always happen when you fail to find the second goal.”

It was truly unbelievable to see that the Spurs couldn’t score, with so many good situations in front of Liverpool’s goal. But that is what separates the leaders and Mourinho’s crew at the moment.

The guests were better in the opening 45 minutes, and they completely dominated the pitch, having 74% of the ball possession in their feet. They couldn’t breach Tottenham’s solid back line up until the 37th minute when Roberto Firmino displayed his creativity and skills. The Brazilian used the inexperience of Spurs’ Japhet Tanganga, to get rid of him before beating Gazzaniga. Eventually, that turned out to be the game-winning goal.

Jurgen Klopp wasn’t that satisfied with his team’s performance, as much as he preferred the final result. The German manager admitted that his team needs to be better in the attack.

“I’m over the moon about the result, but we have to talk about the performance. We should have scored more goals – that’s the truth. We have to be honest with ourselves.”

Tanganga made his debut for the Spurs, and he had the toughest possible opponent across the field. The youngster didn’t disappoint at all, and it appears that Mourinho might have got himself a new cornerstone for the future.

“The lads have been good, speaking to me, talking to me, telling me to be myself, do what I’ve been doing in training… I am grateful that the manager is giving that trust to me,” he said.

"I really thought we could have nicked something at the end. Maybe a draw. Maybe even a win."

When mentioning Mourinho, he praised the young fella after the game, saying that Liverpool’s defenders surely remembered his name. As for the game, the Portuguese coach stated he didn’t have anything to say to his players. He knows that Tottenham could take more from this one, but with all the problems around the team, he is satisfied despite the result.

“We deserved more than what we got. I can be only proud with my team.”

The Spurs are now eighth in the standings with 30 points, nine fewer than Chelsea, who is occupying the No.4, which leads to the Champions League. Up next, they face Middlesbrough in the replay match of the FA Cup.

On the other side, Liverpool awaits their old enemy, Manchester United next Sunday.
