Steve Kerr Believes Andrew Wiggins is Underrated Player

February 21, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Steve Kerr believes that his newest addition to the Golden State, Andrew Wiggins, is an underrated player. The Warriors’ coach stated that after last night’s home loss against the Houston Rockets 105-135.

The former No.1 pick recently landed in California and is still getting used to playing in the new environment. Besides that, Wiggins is learning the entirely new concept of basketball, as Warriors play much differently than his previous team, the Minnesota Timberwolves.

“He’s one of those guys people have said he’s overrated now for a couple of years,” coach Kerr. “He’s become underrated.”

Even though many believe that Wiggins’ future with the Warriors isn’t that bright, and that the organization will trade him sometime in future, Kerr’s statements are not backing up those claims.

Warriors’ HC yesterday also told that he wants to see the 24-year old forward and Steph Curry together on the court until the end of the season. Kerr thinks that it is utterly important for the team that these two guys develop chemistry before future challenges.

“I think it’s important for Steph and Andrew to get to know each other and to play together,” Kerr stated. “I think it’s important for Steph to play without all the guys we’ve lost who are not gonna be back next year,” meaning about Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala, and Shaun Livingston.

Now, this indicates that Wiggins’ trade wasn’t forced, but instead planned. We already wrote that AW’s potential role here among the Warriors would be to replace Iguodala in a certain way. His athleticism is fantastic and can match with Iggy’s, which would be superb on the defensive side on the court.

Meanwhile, Wiggins is a much better attacker than the new Miami Heat member, and he might end up to be the perfect mixture of Iguodala and KD. He won’t be able to replace their specific roles, but his versatility might get the best from both sides, which would allow Kerr to have more combinations not only on the court, but on the roster too.

Wiggins had a team-high against the Golden State Warriors last night, delivering 22 points, shooting 10-for-17, but he again didn’t have a single assist. That is why many criticize this guy, as he never developed a touch for sharing the ball and being a passer. It is something Kerr will need to change in the future, because GSW’s biggest strength throughout the years was in fact that fast ball movement and the Dub Nation was always among the teams with the most assists in the league.

Things will no doubt change radically once Steph comes back, but when Klay Thomspon also returns to action, Warriors will be a totally different team from the current one. Kerr revealed to the journalists that the second part of the Splash Brothers is recovering just fine.

“It’s been a very frustrating year for Klay but I think he’s almost out of the woods,” Kerr said. “He’s a couple months away from this season ending and him moving toward a summer of preparing for the next season with his teammates.”

When talking about the near future of the Warriors, they have a clash this Sunday against the Pelicans at home, and after that, two more games at Chase Center. Dub Nation awaits the Kings on Tuesday and the Lakers on Thursday.
