Todd Gurley Will Join the Atlanta Falcons Sources Say

March 20, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Todd Gurley and the Atlanta Falcons have reached an agreement that will land the running back in Georgia. At the same time, when Tom Brady officially became a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the former LA Rams’ superstar and the Falcons struck a deal that shook the league.

It is said that the contract is just for one year, and that Gurley first has to pass the physical before finishing the paperwork.

Breaking: Todd Gurley and the Atlanta Falcons have reached a one-year deal, according to @Schultz_Report.

Only one day after getting released by the LA Rams, once a top MVP contender has found the new destination. Among several teams in option, Gurley picked Atlanta, and the state where he feels at home. Just to remind you, the 25-year old had spent three seasons with Georgia Bulldogs while attending college.

Even though he had numerous options, it seems that the Falcons were a logical choice, not only because of Gurley’s past but also due to several other factors. The first one is that Atlanta released their No.1 running back, Devonta Freeman, this Monday. The newcomer will fill in this his spot and take the leading role in Falcons’ running game.

The second factor, which also influenced a lot according to all the experts, is Dante Fowler, who played with Gurley in the LA Rams. Fowler recently signed a three-year $48 million deal with the Falcons, and he publicly called his former teammate to come to join him in Georgia.

Atlanta aims to have one more push towards the Super Bowl and try and redeem for a horrifying loss against the Pats in the legendary SB LI. Time is running out on their QB Matt Ryan who has 34 years, and on one of the best WRs in the league Julio Jones who is 31. On the other side, the owner Arthur Blank, too, wants to have one more try with the current staff and roster before entering a process of a rebuild.

The sources from within the team are saying that anything below the playoffs would be considered a massive failure. It practically means that the Falcons are going all-in on this season, which suits Gurley perfectly. Dan Quinn’s side was one of the worst in the entire league last season when looking at the running game. They had 1,361 rushing yards, and just 10 TDs on the ground. It is twice as fewer than Gurley alone had in 2018 campaign once he received the Offensive Player of the Year honors. Back then, TG was in the combination for the MVP award, with 1,251 rushing yards and 21 scores in total.

That is something expected to improve with Gurley’s arrival, but still, there are some doubts about his capabilities. Many are claiming that he isn’t explosive as before and that his knees are not 100% healthy. Even if they are, his level of physicality isn’t the same as before. The proof for that are the numbers from his previous year. In 15 starts for the Rams, Gurley had 12 touchdowns, 857 yards, which is his career-low, and 3.8 yards per snap, which is 1.1 yards fewer than during 2018.

The risk is moderate, but if everything goes well, and Gurley manages to reach 80% of the form from his previous seasons, there is no doubt that the Falcons are going to be a nasty opponent for any team in the league.
