Geronimo Allison Signs a One-Year Deal With the Detroit Lions

Detroit Lions have agreed to a one-year contract with wide receiver Geronimo Allison. According to all the analysts, this is a win-win situation for both parties.

The Lions haven’t revealed the details of the arrangement, but according to Ian Rapoport, it seems that Allison inked a deal that would get him $910,000 plus $135,000 signing bonus, which is maximum on the veteran minimum scale for his age.

Alisson played in Green Bay throughout his whole career. Last year the team from Wisconsin hoped that the 26-year old might replace Randall Cobb, who left the Packers and become their second receiver. Unfortunately for both sides, that didn’t happen.

At the end of one pretty disappointing season for the player, Allison generated just 34 receptions, for 287 passing yards, and an average of 8.4 yards per catch. He had two touchdowns and two fumbles in 16 games played, six of them as a starter.

Allison indicated that he might be an important part of the Packers’ team back in 2018 when he had 20 catches in five games for 303 yards but picked up an injury in Week 4, which disrupted his excellent form. The Packs would re-sign him at the start of the previous season, giving him $2.8 million for one year. However, he played under every expectation.

The Packers signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2016. Before that, Allison spent two years at Ilinois where he posted eight touchdowns, and 1,480 yards receiving, appearing in 14 games for Fighting Illini.

Many see this move as an excellent job for both sides. Allison would no doubt have a much better situation than in Green Bay, and this might be a chance for him to revive his career. On the other side, the Lions didn’t use too much cash, and Allison’s contact is not a big hit to their salary cap. Meanwhile, he has some experience, which isn’t great, but flashes of his potential seen in Green Bay are worth risking for, especially for such low salary. The franchise from the Motor City is perfectly aware of his abilities, as he posted one touchdown and 91 yards in four catches against them back in 2016.

Allison will start the season as the fourth wide receiver behind Danny Amendola, Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay. If his groin injury healed well enough, Detroit might get a WR capable of helping guys mentioned above.

The Lions entered 2019 with high expectations, and eventually, they ended the same with just three wins, 12 losses, and one draw. After winning two and drawing one game during the first three weeks, it seemed that Matt Patricia found the formula that could bring success. Twelve losses in the next thirteen matches made one of the most disappointing stretches in Lions’ history and created massive frustration among the fans.

All this forced the organization and Patricia to make huge changes. Defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni retired, strength coach Harold Nash, special teams coordinator John Bonamego, and several other coaches were fired. This is likely the last chance for Patricia to stay in his position, and it appears that he has no room for any mistakes.

Lions have the third selection at the upcoming NFL draft, and that is something that would also have a massive impact on their results in the coming season.
