Jan Blachowicz Wants to Fight for the Title, Eyeing Jones

April 9, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Jan Blachowicz wants a shot at the light heavyweight title, and he isn’t willing to settle with anything less than that. The Polish fighter stated that recently, adding that it would be perfect for him to meet Jon Jones in the octagon and avoid all other scenarios. Blachowicz also said that he wouldn’t accept any offers for an interim title battle.

In his recent interview, the Prince of Cieszyn (which is his nickname back home), told that even though Jones faces legal problems, he is willing to wait for the champ to sort everything out.

“No, I’m waiting for Jon Jones,” Blachowicz said. “I will wait for the title shot. I will not accept any different fight.”

Jan Blachowicz doesn't care about Jon Jones' legal issues: 'I want to beat him in the octagon' https://t.co/FPlqdv0rl7 pic.twitter.com/Sruysw2kad

The 37-year old knows that this might be his last chance to do something noticeable in the UFC, but he doesn’t want to choose the easy way and avoid one of the best ever. The fact that the champion committed law violations isn’t bothering Blachowicz, who underlined that he doesn’t want to interfere in his personal matters.

“It’s nothing new, so I was just, ‘It’s OK. He (did) this again, but I don’t care.’ I want to beat him in the octagon. I don’t care what he does outside the octagon. It’s his life, so I don’t care.”

After starting his UFC career with two wins and four losses, Blachowicz made stunning progress, which saw him winning seven of his last eight fights. Among others, he defeated Jared Cannonier, Luke Rockhold, Ronaldo Souza, and in the latest bout Corey Anderson, and that was via KO in the first round.

This run of results qualified him for the title match, but the recent developments might slow his plans. The COVID-19 pandemic created all sorts of troubles, but it appears that Dana White can handle that. On the other side, Jones’ legal concerns won’t disappear that easily.

There is one other option, which could be acceptable for Blachowicz, and that is to fight someone for the vacant light heavyweight title.

“It has to be for the title,” he said. “If they make this fight, I can agree about it, but it has to be for the title shot.”

Right now, the one guy who could be facing Blachowicz is Dominick Reyes. The Mexican was fantastic against Jones in their recent fight, and although he lost via unanimous decision, that verdict of the judges was marked as pretty controversial. Dana White himself didn’t agree with it.

For the first time after a long period, we’ve seen Jones struggling to maintain his composure and focus in some parts of this battle. The champion wasn’t beaten for sure, but we can’t agree that he deserved to win with a unanimous decision.

This scenario would be fair for both sides. For Reyes, who really did show fantastic potential and indicated that he might succeed Bones at the throne at some point; and for Blachowicz, who is red hot over the last few years.

It is up to Dana White to decide what is going to happen next. Will he wait for Jones, or organize an interim title battle (probably without Blachowicz). Or maybe strip the champ of his belt once again. White , too, has a lot of things going through his mind, and the majority are connected with the upcoming UFC 249.

He needs to pull out this one without any mistakes, and if he does that, the future of the UFC lightweight division will be on the table. Any other outcome puts this one hold.
