Bundesliga: Werder Bremen vs. Bayer Leverkusen Preview, Odds and Prediction

May 17, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen are closing the 26th round of Bundesliga on Monday night. It is the first full weekend of football in Germany since COVID-19 pandemic shut down stadiums and arenas all over this country. The two sides are coming into this matchup in a different mood, but with the same mission – to win. Werder is in the relegation zone and they need to start taking points, while on the other side, Leverkusen is fifth in the standings with 47 points, four fewer than RB Leipzig on the fourth position which leads to the Champions League.

Preview

Werder (+400) is second to the last and is five points away from Fortuna in 16th place. That is important for them because this position leads to the playout and gives a chance for staying in the Bundesliga through a matchup with third from Bundesliga 2.

Also, Werder is nine points behind Mainz, who is above the red area, but with the note that today’s hosts have two games in hand, and that gives a reasonable hope to their fans when talking about survival in the top tier of German football.

The home team didn’t win in five straight, recording four losses and a draw, and also not being able to score in four contests during that span. Meanwhile, their defense has been highly unreliable, allowing at least two goals in the previous eight consecutive games.

Leverkusen (-130) has a nice chance to reach the Champions League zone. Leipzig continued with its horrifying stretch and slipped once again at home, which opens a perfect position for Bayer. With a win here, they are one point away from the UCL place, which would be a superb situation for these guys.

Peter Bosz’s side was superb before the hiatus and didn’t lose in 10 straight games, winning nine of them and posting only one draw, against RB on the road. During that period, they would defeat Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, eliminate Porto from the Europa League and smash Rangers in the first leg of the round of 16 of the same competition, on the road, 1-3. So all in all, this is not a team to be messing with.

Bayer won seven games, posted one draw and four losses in away games in Bundesliga. That ranks them fourth overall when looking only at this aspect.

Latest News

The situation is not bright for the hosts, as they have several important players absent for this contest. Davy Klaassen is suspended due to a red card, Niclas Fullkrug, Kevin Mohwald, and Claudio Pizarro are out, while Omer Toprak should be ready, but is still uncertain according to the media in Germany.

On the other side, Bayer has problems with Kevin Volland, who is questionable, and will be a game-time decision.

Head to Head Games

The first leg this season ended with a draw, 2-2. It was an interesting match in which both sides had a lead, but in the end, a draw seemed a fair result. Usually, their clashes are efficient, and four of the previous five saw both teams score and over 3.5 goals, Remember this when making your bet.

Prediction

As we see, it seems that the pause didn’t affect on strikers and forwards and that they continued at the same pace as before the shutdown. In accordance with this out first suggestion is Over 2.5 goals with the moneyline at -163. Yet, the profits here are too low, so we have a backup plan Over 1.5 goals in the second halftime are set at -125.
