Chelsea Stops Manchester City, Liverpool Wins the Title

June 25, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

After 30 years of waiting, Liverpool won the English Premier League trophy. It was Chelsea who once again decided the champions, only this time the Blues defeated Manchester City, 2-1, giving a green light for the celebration party in Liverpool.

“I have no words,” Klopp said. “It’s the best thing I can imagine and more than I could have ever dreamed of. It’s unbelievable. Much more than I ever thought would be possible.”

The incredible drought which lasted for three decades is over, with the Reds clinching two European titles in the meantime, but without having a chance to lift the EPL title.

Several years ago, the famous “Gerrard slip” took place against Chelsea, and today, we saw the Blues once again doing their part of the job very well, when it comes to deciding the title race. They defeated Manchester City with 2-1, with the Citizens staying behind the Reds 23 points with seven games to go.

The American midfielder and one of the world’s most talented players, Christian Pulisic scored the opener in the 36th minute. It was after his trademark run towards the goal, with the Sky-Blues being helpless in front of the pacey playmaker.

But the guests from Manchester equalized in the 55th minute when Kevin de Bruyne netted from a free-kick, adding one more super-goal to his already impressive resume. One minute later, City had a chance to score again and to turn the game upside down, but Raheem Sterling, like so many times before, missed a golden opportunity, hitting the post instead of the net.

It was the 77th minute when Fernandinho stopped the ball from entering the goal with his hand. The referee had no doubts, showing towards the penalty spot, and showing the red card to the Brazilian who had to go out.

Willian took the responsibility, and beat Ederson, indicating that his team takes over the wheel in this event. There was nothing special or worth mentioning until the end, with the Blues handling the situation calmly.

Frank Lampard spoke after the match about the current difference between Liverpool and City and the rest of the league.

“I think for the last three seasons, themselves [Liverpool] and City have been out on their own pretty much, and that’s a lot of work,” he said. “It’s a gap that we want to try and breach, we want to move up towards — they are two of the best teams in the world. Again, credit to Liverpool for what they’ve done.”

The Blues have 54 points, five more than Manchester United and Wolves, who are tied at the fifth place with 49 points. Meanwhile, Liverpool has 86 points and is first with 23 points more than the Citizens. For them, the Premier League race is over, but the challenges are yet to become with the upcoming second leg against Real Madrid.

Guardiola’s machinery won in Madrid 1-2, and they were, in fact, targeting this competition to be the main one, not the EPL, where City lost any prospects of defending the crown a long time.

As for Liverpool, there is a massive party all over the city, with tens of thousands of fans making one hell of an atmosphere on the city’s streets. The Reds were eliminated in the UCL round of 16 against Atletico Madrid, but that won’t be remembered for too long after this success.
