Bayern Munich Hammers Leverkusen, 4-2, Wins DFB Pokal Trophy

July 4, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Bayern Munich defeated Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 in the finals of the German Cup today in Berlin. This was another proof that the reigning German champions are no match for all other teams from this country.

The game at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin was a pure joy for all Bayern Munich fans as their favorites beat Bayer without too many troubles. It was the 20th German Cup trophy for this club, and the second piece of silverware this season.

After securing the Bundesliga title, jumping over all the rivals in the last few rounds of the championship, Bayern captured the Cup, recording another Double.

“We are super happy that we got the double. In the first half we had the game completely under control, could have scored one or two more goals. After that Leverkusen had a lot of counterattacks, but in the end we won 4-2 – and that’s the most important thing,” said Serge Gnabry after the match

The fantastic winger scored the second goal in the match, and was very inspired to play. Yet, Robert Lewandowski was once against in the center of attention. The Polish international netted two times, breaking the limit of 50 goals, and once again making a strong bid for this season’s Golden Ball award.

Even though many see Messi, Ronaldo or Kevin De Bruyne as the main favorites, Lewa’s performances are pretty impressive, and at least at the same level as theirs.

Bayern’s striker scored the third and the fourth goal, both of them very attractive. His first was a volley, which is definitely one of the best this weekend, if not the best one.

We need to mention David Alaba’s free-kick in the 16th minute once the Austrian defender hit the back of the net for 1-0. It was a masterpiece equal to Lewandowski’s score. In general, all of Bayern’s scores tonight were impressive.

On the other side, Sven Bender decreased to 3-1, and Kai Havertz, one of the most talented players in the world, set the final 4-2 in the stoppage time. This was another frustrating defeat for Leverkusen against Bayern, who trashed them recently in Bundesliga.

“We weren’t in the game at the beginning. We lacked the courage, the trust, the experience. Then you lay back, and then it got really hard. Maybe you could tell that it was the first final for one or the other,” said Leverkusen’s defender Lars Bender.

Bayer didn’t manage to secure the place among the top four teams in the Bundesliga, and they won’t participate in the Champions League next year. It is a massive blow for the team from Leverkusen, and this loss in the finals is only making things worse.

Meanwhile, Bayern could win all three trophies, and make this season one of the best in its history. They are currently the biggest candidates for winning the UCL trophy along with Manchester City, and have a nice chance to enter the top eight teams on the continent. After slashing Chelsea in the opening game of the round of 16 stage, 0-3 at Stamford, they have a rematch in Munich.

But having in mind the resulting form that the first leg, it is almost inevitable to see the Bavarians in Lisbon, where UEFA scheduled the final eight tournaments. That competition should start somewhere in early August.
