Fun Stats From Braves 29-9 Shellacking of Marlins

September 11, 2020 By Kreighton R Leave a Comment

The Braves scored 29 runs against Miami on Wednesday, September 9th. The Marlins scored 9. Atlanta won 29-9. Yes … 29 runs. This was the most runs scored by one team in an MLB game since Texas destroyed Baltimore 30-3 in 2007.

USA TODAY

The Braves became just the 4th team since 1950 to score 29+ runs in a ballgame. The Red Sox beat the Philadelphia Athletics 29-4 in 1950 and the White Sox matched that total by beating the Kansas City Athletics 29-6 5 years later. Fortunately the A’s franchise has not allowed 29 runs since moving to Oakland, but rumor has it they moved west to get as far as possible from teams ending in “Sox”.

Atlanta outfielder Adam Duvall stood out as the top performer in the Braves’ lineup Wednesday – which is saying something considering the team recorded 23 hits, belted 7 homeruns, and crossed the plate 29 times .

Duvall was 3-4 with 3 homeruns and 9 RBIs! The 9 RBIs ties a Braves franchise record. This performance was just 7 days after Duvall hit 3 homeruns against Boston, making him the first player in Braves history to record multiple 3-HR games in the same season.

Before his first 3-HR game, Duvall’s numbers were pretty bland. He now owns a respectable slash line and is a shoo-in for NL Player of the Week.

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman drove in 6 runs Wednesday while Ronald Acuna knocked in 5. You know it’s a good day when 5 RBIs is only good for third-highest on the team.

Pablo Lopez couldn’t last 2 innings as the Marlins’ starter – surrendering 7 earned runs in 1 and ⅔ innings. “He just seemed to be out of sync,” deduced astute Marlins manager Don Mattingly. Yeah Don … ya think?

Jordan Yamamoto came on in relief to stop the swelling and allowed 12 earned runs himself. You were supposed to relieve the situation, Jordan. This feat makes Yamamoto just the 2nd relief pitcher since 1950 to allow 12+ earned runs in an outing.

29 runs is a new franchise high for the Braves, shattering their previous record of 23. Atlanta’s 7 homeruns accounted for 18 of their 29 runs, which is tied for the most runs driven in by the long ball in MLB history.

The 20-run loss is the largest defeat in Marlins history. 9 runs is enough to win most games but didn’t even make the Braves sweat in this one. This is the first game since 2017 in which a team has scored 9+ runs but allowed 20+. The Marlins were on the positive side of this whooping, as Miami defeated the Texas Rangers 22-10.

In 2020, teams are 136-11 when scoring 9 runs or more. Both teams having good offensive days resulted in a lofty combined run total – 38. This is the highest run total since Boston beat Texas 19-17 in August of 2008.
