Denver Broncos Defeat New York Jets on Thursday Night Football, 37-28

October 2, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Denver Broncos beat the New York Jets on Thursday Night Football and notched their first win of the season. The final result was 37-28 for the hosts from Colorado, who slightly improved the terrible atmosphere surrounding the team.

“Winning has cured more ills than penicillin,” said Broncos head coach Vic Fangio following the game.

There was an interesting moment when the time expired, with Fangio ordering his players to go straight to the locker room without having any conversation with the opponents. He himself rushed towards the exit without meeting Jets’ Adam Gase and having the usual handshaking.

It seems that Fangio was heavily upset with the way Jets’ players played in the finish, with several of them being a bit more rough than usual, which could have led to injuries. When we add that Denver already has numerous injured players on its roster, Fangio’s frustration could be understood.

He, meanwhile, has a bit different explanation for everything.

“There was just a couple of personal fouls there at the end, and our sideline was getting (ticked) off about it,” Fangio said. “I just wanted to avoid any confrontation at the end of the game and having it get ugly there.”

The home team was constantly chasing the result, and with 6:23 to go, Sam Ficken’s 36-yard field goal finally gave an edge to the Jets for 28-27.

Denver responded with Brandon McManus’ FG from 53 yards, to lif the guests up to 30-28. Sam Darnold had a chance to become a hero. Instead, he was sacked at fourth-and-3, handing the football to the Broncos once again. Denver started the attack 43 yards away from the endzone, and that distance was covered in a single rush by Melvin Gordon, who put an end to this match.

Darnold was again sacked on the next snap, and after four unsuccessful plays, the game was over. The NYJ’s QB was sacked six times in this match, for 54 negative yards, and was hurt during one snap, when he had to go out and evaluate his shoulder.

He posted 230 yards, 23 completions in 42 attempts, without TDs or picks, but managed to rush for 84 yards on 6 carries and have one TD.

Brett Rypien had 19 completed passes on 31 attempts, for 242 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted three times.

“We got the win, that was the goal coming into tonight,” Rypien said. “That’s what I wanted to do. That feels really good … I’m thinking about we got the win tonight, and I’m feeling pretty good about it.”

His two TD passes went to Tim Patrick, who had six receptions for 113 yards, and Jerry Jeudy, who had 61 yards on two catches. Jeudy scored after a 48-yard pass in the second, firing up the Broncos’ team.

Melvin Gordon had a very good game rushing 107 yards on 23 carries and delivering two touchdowns.

On the other side, apart from Darnold, the second TD for the Jets was brought by Pierre Desir, who intercepted Brett Rypien and returned the football for a 35-yard score.

Sam Ficken was perfect with all of his five field-goal attempts on target, while Jamison Crowder caught seven passes for 104 yards.

“It’s definitely frustrating to come out here and lose another one,” he said.

The Jets (0-4) await Arizona Cardinal in the next round and then visit LA to play against the Chargers week after that.

Broncos (1-3) head to Foxborough where Cam Newton and the New England Patriots await them. After that, Fangio’s boys have two home games versus Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs.
