Kansas City Chiefs Stopped at Home, Gruden and the Raiders Pillage the Place, 40-32

October 11, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Las Vegas Raiders managed to ruin Kansas City Chiefs’ perfect record, inflicting them a loss at the Arrowhead stadium tonight. Jon Gruden’s boys went home with a 40-32 win, stunning the Super Bowl champions.

It seemed that Patrick Mahomes got his offense rolling in the second quarter, once Chiefs reached a 14-3 lead, and responding to Las Vegas’ TD, with one of their own, which would lift them at 21-10. Yet the resilient Raiders proved that they might be one of the most interesting teams this year, pulling back from behind and leveling the game before the halftime.

After a tough third period, the Raiders scored 16 straight points within nine and a half minutes of the final, and that proved to be a big task even for the champs.

“I thought we came back…but offensively could have done a better job. Defensively they got the better of us the first half. We have to do a better job on that balance,” said Andy Reid, who added that he intends to look at all the footages of the game and see where the Raiders made a difference.

The difference was the more versatile offense. Several players among the guests had big plays, and were following one another, shifting as leaders, pulling their team in critical moments. On top of that parade was Derek Carr with 347 yards, 22-of-31 for three TD passes and one interception.

“I am just happy that Derek got a big win.” He knows that Carr takes a lot of criticism,” Jon Gruden stated. “We’ve been playing pretty good (before today), honestly.”

Carr and his receivers had two spectacular plays, one delivered by Henry Ruggs III and the second by Nelson Agholor. The first caught a 72-yard TD, while the former Eagle ended in the end zone after a 59-yard reception.

“We didn’t bring Ruggs in here to run hitch routes,” Gruden told the reporters in his style.

We can’t forget Josh Jacobs with 2 TDs, and a colossal effort in this match, with 23 rushes for 77 yards. Darren Waller also had a score.

Across the field, Patrick Mahomes had 340 yards, 22-for-43, for two scores and an interception. The 2018 MVP also had one running TD, and with 21 yards, he was the second-best rusher for the hosts in tonight’s match. Clyde Edwards-Helaire had just 40 as the no.1 option.

Tyreek Hill added one TD on the ground, too, while Travis Kelce and Sammy Watkins had receiving scores. The latter had to leave the game due to what seems to be a hamstring injury. Kelce, meanwhile, yielded 108 yards on 8 catches, Hill 78 on three.

“We didn’t execute at a high enough level…we didn’t run the plays the right way, and I couldn’t find the right reads,” Mahomes revealed his point of view about this event.

Kansas City is 4-1, and has one very tough matchup coming up next Monday, against the Buffalo Bills on the road. That will be a true test for the champions. After that, the Chiefs travel to Denver to meet the Broncos, before coming back home for what appears to be a pair of a bit easier contests vs. the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers.

The Raiders face Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in two weeks, as they have a bye on next Sunday. Gruden and the crew visit Cleveland and LA following the pause to meet Browns and Chargers.
