Ajax Amsterdam’s Youngsters Stun Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus, 1-2

April 16, 2019 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Tonight’s Champions League clashes have brought one big surprise, which will no doubt be remembered for a long time.

Despite all odds and predictions, the young team of Ajax Amsterdam defeated Juventus in Turin and advanced to the Champions League semifinals. The Dutch side won 1-2, after a huge battle at Allianz Stadium.

“We did it again!” said Ajax’s captain Matthijs de Ligt, who scored the game-winner.

The 19-year old is one of the top central defenders in the world and one of the hottest goods on the market right now. There is no doubt that Ajax will make a lot of money on this teenager.

De Ligt and his teammates stunned one of the best teams in this competition and the third biggest favorites for taking the trophy. After a tough game back in Amsterdam, where they managed to come out with a draw, 1-1, this performance was magical. Especially in the second 45 minutes.

Also, it was proof that a win against Real Madrid in the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu wasn’t just a one-time burst.

But just like in the first game, things didn’t start as planned for the Lancers. Cristiano Ronaldo was once again lethal for the four-time European Champions.

It was the 28th minute when he smashed the ball into the net with a header. A corner kick from the right preceded Ronaldo’s goal, but that didn’t discourage the youngsters from Amsterdam.

Seven minutes later Donny van de Beek leveled the score, after one of the rare mistakes of Juventus’ defense in this competition. One of their defenders didn’t move the offside line as he should, and the 21-year old beat Szczesny from the nearby without any troubles.

“I knew for sure that I wasn’t offside [when I scored]. I saw that one of their defenders had hung back and was playing me on,” said van de Beek after the game, and stated that most of the people didn’t believe in his team before the competition started, and especially before the knockout stage began.

“We are in the semi-finals. People would have laughed if we had said that before the tournament started.”

At those moments, it was obvious that Juventus lost the momentum. The guests started to be more cheeky and aggressive, but that didn’t give results until the end of the halftime.

But in the second 45 minutes on the field, only one team existed – Ajax.

The Lancers were schooling the hosts, displaying the full potential of their youth, and outplaying the more experienced and expensive opponents.

Dusan Tadic was harassing the defense, Neres threatened every time he had the ball, and the relentless Ziyech and Frenkie de Jong bossed the midfield.

It didn’t take long before another goal silenced the stadium.

This will restore your faith in football 👊

Ajax’s captain De Ligt, who was the man of the match, jumped high above all Juventus’ defenders and headed the ball beside Szczesny for an absolute delirium among the visiting fans, and at the bench of his team.

Until the end of the game, Ajax could have net at least once more, but they missed the opportunity to make this epic triumph even greater.

Juventus’ coach Massimiliano Allegri congratulated to his rivals, saying that they deserved the win, particularly with the way they played in the second halftime.

“Ajax clearly deserved the victory, especially in the second half. They had a bit of luck with their quick equalizer but they played very well after the break.”

Being labeled as the underdogs in almost every game since the competition started, Erik ten Hag’s team faced many doubts throughout the whole campaign. Despite excellent performances in the group with Bayern Munich, Valencia, and AEK Athens, and after the elimination of Real Madrid, they were a bit underestimated by the most of the experts before the game with Juve.

"We are never satisfied."

"There's so much potential in this team, we are all still quite young and you see us grow every game."

You can see why Matthijs de Ligt is the captain of this Ajax team…

After all that they are just two games away from the finals, and the chance to win the biggest trophy in their lives.

Can we can go on to win the competition?,” said de Ligt.”Well, we are in the semi-finals now. And we have eliminated two of the favorites in the last two rounds. The next games will be very difficult, but so were these. So who knows?”

We’ll see about that in two weeks time, when the first semifinal matches take place.
