Burnley Delivers a Slap in the Face for Manchester United, 0-2

January 22, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Manchester United received another slap in the face, this time after losing at home to Burnley, 0-2. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s guys were humiliated in front of the full Old Trafford, missing a perfect opportunity for closing down on Chelsea and the No.4 in the English Premier League standings.

It would be easy to say that the home team fans protested against United’s players and Solskajer after the match. Many of them were booing and were very aggressive, as Man Utd once again disappointed.

Club’s legends were very harsh in their statements, and Rio Ferdinand, for example, didn’t hide his anger about the current situation in the team.

“I’m embarrassed,” Ferdinand on BT Sport, where he often appears as a commentator. “I’m embarrassed to be here. THey’ve spent £600m on players in recent years and I don’t see it out there.”

"I don't see a £600m squad out there! What has been bought?!"

"I'm sitting up here and I'm embarrassed!" 😩

"People at the top need to make changes. You can't defend this!" 😡@rioferdy5's blood is boiling as he reacts to Burnley's first win at Old Trafford since 1962… pic.twitter.com/KOr2UyiZ5N

The home team opened the event aggressively and had a couple of great chances, particularly through Martial. However, after missing all of them, the punishment from the other side arrived.

Chris Wood scored for 0-1 and a shock at the Old Trafford. It was then that United’s fans realized that this match isn’t going to go the way they planned.

“We grinded it out at times, but that’s what we’re good at. We got the two goals and put in a great defensive performance,” said Wood.

Burnley is one of the toughest teams in the league, with an ultra-conservative approach to the game. The Red Devils could experience that from the first hand and see what it looks like to battle the Clarets once they have a lead.

No matter the pressure, the guests defended well. On the other hand, they were clinical in the attack. Jay Rodriguez doubled the lead in the 56th minute, after a marvelous score. De Gea couldn’t do anything, and Burnley was on its way to posting another big win after beating Leicester City this weekend.

Nick Pope, their goalkeeper, was confident, and he didn’t allow any problems in his area, with the only interesting situation in front of his net being Luke Shaw’s score, which was eventually disallowed following a foul made previously.

This loss came in the worst possible moment for United, who had a nice chance to get within three points from Chelsea and to improve its position in the Champions League race. Right now, Man Utd has 34 points, Chelsea 40, but Tottenham also joined with the same number of points as Solskjaer’s side. Wolves, too, have the same amount of points with a game in hand, against Liverpool, played tomorrow night.

“We can’t do anything other than hold our hands up and say this isn’t good enough for this club,” Man Utd’s manager stated. “You can talk about our poor start [to the season] all day long, but of course, we work every single day with these boys to improve. We’re looking to improve, definitely.”

Burnley is 14th in the standings, but they have 30 points and are awfully close to the European competitions.

In other matches today, Leicester City bounced back after a nasty loss against Burnley, defeating West Ham with 4-1. Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham Hotspur beat Norwich City much tougher than expected, 2-1.
