Champions League News – United’s Late Win, Real Confident

November 28, 2018 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Champions League group stage is approaching its end, and we saw 8 games today, which eventually solved all the enigmas about the round of 16 participants from groups E, F, G, H.

Starting with group E, in which Bayer Munich demolished Benfica with 5-1. The German champions, who have a lot of issues since this season started, reminded for a brief moment how they used to play under Jupp Heynckes. The Portuguese club didn’t have a slightest chance to endanger their success. Arjen Robben and Robert Levandowski netted twice apiece, with another veteran Frank Ribery putting his name on the scoresheet.

Besides Bayern, Ajax is also in the next stage. The Dutch powerhouse defeated AEK Athens 0-2, after some ugly scenes seen on the stadium. The fans made a mess in the stands and there were several injured persons, but fortunately none of them seriously.

Manchester City is through after they played 2-2 in the Lyon today. The hosts had a lead twice, but somehow the Citizens always came back, refusing to give up. The French team will have to stay unbeaten in Ukraine in order to advance to the round of 16.

Shakhtar Donetsk shocked Hoffenheim in the 93rd minute of the match in Germany, scoring a late winner, for a massive triumph, 3-2. With these three points, the Miners as the fans call them, jumped into the race for the second place.

Group G, isn’t that much interesting. Even before this round, everything was decided. Roma and Real Madrid are on top, and the only question was in which order are they going to finish. And we have an answer on that question also. The reigning European champions showed that they haven’t forgotten to play, by defeating the Italians on their soil, 0-2. It was a huge win for Real, in terms of boosting their morale a little bit.
Viktoria Plzen, the Czech champion, made a shocking comeback in Moscow, after losing 1-0. In the end, it was 1-2. The underdogs clawed their way back, and they now even have a chance to finish third and go to the Europa League knockout stage.

And lastly, the H Group. Jose Mourinho was sweating throughout the whole regular part of the game until Marouane Fellaini scored a game-winner in the first minute of the injury time against the Swiss champs, Young Boys, 1-0. The Portuguese manager then took the basket with water bottles and smashed it to the ground, expressing his feelings. That goal was enough for the Red Devils to clinch a win, which eventually turned out to be crucial for their advance to the knockout stage.

What was good for United was the result in Turin, where Juventus defeated Valencia, also with 1-0, thus eliminating the Spaniards from the race for the second spot. They now have five points fewer than Manchester United with one game until the end.

The Champions League continues tomorrow, with several big clashes like the one in Paris between PSG and Liverpool, or the one in London where Tottenham Hotspurs host Inter. Both events are very important and can decide the faith of the rivals, sending one in the next phase of this competition, and eliminating the other.

So stay tuned, and don’t miss tomorrow’s action, there will be a lot of excitement throughout Europe.
