Chelsea Shocks Manchester City to Win the UEFA Champions League, 1-0

May 29, 2021 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Chelsea is the European champions for the 2020/21 season. Thomas Tuchel and his team defeated Manchester City in all-English finals, 1-0.

Kai Havertz delivered the sole goal in this event three minutes before the end of the first half. Chelsea would repeat the biggest success of this club, adding one more continental title following the one in 2012.

In front of 14, 100 spectators, according to UEFA’s official data, the Blues made a big upset against the heavily favored English Premier League champions. Chelsea was tactically perfect, not allowing City to have its usual rhythm, cutting off their wing forwards, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez, who were unrecognizable throughout the majority of the game.

Thomas Tuchel outsmarted his counterpart from Manchester City, Pep Guardiola, perfectly stopping all of the Spaniards’ attacks and plans.

“The players were determined to win this. We wanted to be a stone in their shoe. We encouraged everybody to step up and step out, to be more brave, and create dangerous counterattacks. It was a tough, physical game. We had to help each other out,” Tuchel explained following the game.

After losing the finals less than a year ago against Bayern Munich in the finals, once leading PSG, in an unreal twist, the 47-year old managed to get his hands on the most prominent trophy in club football.

His boys had a few chances to score in the opening phase of the match, but Timo Werner missed each one of them.

Manchester City also had a nice opportunity for netting, but Raheem Sterling was once again indecisive. It could be said that that he completely failed to show up in this match and is one of the biggest disappointments tonight for City’s fans.

Both teams lost their captains along the way. It was the 37th minute once Thiago Silva had to leave the pitch due to his injury. In the 57th, Antonio Rudiger deliberately hit Kevin De Bruyne in the face, resulting in his early substitution. The German player got just a yellow card for his dirty play.

“It was a tight game. Being in the UEFA Champions League final for the first time, we played a good final. We showed courage, especially in the second half. They did everything and put everything in,” Guardiola stated on tonight’s game.

This was yet another failure for him and the Citizens, who were heavy favorites coming into this event. We are still unsure what will happen with the Spaniard because there were some suggestions that he might leave at the end of the season. Even though City became one of the most dominant teams in the English Premier League, their failures on the international stage brought noting less than big frustrations.

Chelsea won its second European title. The first was nine years ago, in Munich, when they defeated Bayern after penalties. One year after that, the Blues conquered the Europa League, the same as in 2019. Since Roman Abramovich took over the team, they have been the best English team, with 17 trophies won during that period.

Just a few expected to see such an ending this year because Blues didn’t look very good halfway through the campaign. That is why they decided to fire Frank Lampard and replace him with Tuchel, who lost his job in PSG. It turned out to be the best possible move.

With this match, the club season in Europe ends. Up next, we have the EURO 2020 starting pretty soon, so get ready for more excellent football.
