EURO 2020 Round of 16: France vs. Switzerland Betting Preview, Odds, Prediction

June 23, 2021 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

It is France against Switzerland in the EURO 2020 Round of 16. National Arena in Bucharest, Romania, will be the venue of yet another matchup between these two sides at major international tournaments. They’ve met at the last EURO, at the 2014 World Cup, and in the 2006 World Cup as well, so we might say without any hesitation that we have one pretty exciting rivalry here. France is a massive favorite, but know that the Swiss side is very problematic for any rival. After all, they wouldn’t be No.13 in the FIFA rankings if there isn’t any quality in their roster.

Preview

France (-195) didn’t impress us at all. They came to EURO as the biggest favorite to win the silverware, but the Gauls weren’t as dominant as many expected during the group stage.

Yes, we are aware that their Group F was the strongest, but that isn’t an alibi for poor performances that came down to waiting for the chance to strike on a break. France is the reigning World champion, and they need to do better. Deschamps mustn’t rely upon Mbappe‘s quickness all the time because PSG’s striker might have a bad day at one point.

The French team is without a defeat in 10 games, and during that time, they had six clean sheets. Five of them were just before the last two matches against Hungary and Portugal.

Switzerland (+600) was more than motivated against Turkey to show its worth. And they’ve demonstrated it in the best possible way. Some would say that their opponents were too weak, but we won’t agree with such a claim. The Swiss side was dominant right from the start, which was the only reason why they posted the first win at EURO 2020.

We need to remind that Vladimir Petkovic’s side had numerous chances against Wales. Instead of solving the Dragons immediately after a scored goal, Switzerland allowed the rivals to comeback and level the result. Even though there were several solid chances in the final few minutes, but Swiss players couldn’t utilize them.

A defeat against Italy is the only one in the past 10 for this unit, which has been pretty efficient during that stretch scoring two or more goals seven times.

Latest News

Ousmane Dembele finished his participation at EURO because of an injury, and we are yet to hear about Lucas Digne’s status. Digne picked up an injury against Portugal.

Switzerland has no trouble with injured players.

Head to Head Matches

In the group stage of the EURO 2016, these teams played without goals. Two years earlier, France demolished Switzerland at the World Cup in Brazil, 5-2. Back in 2006, during the World Cup group in Germany, these nations played without goals once more.

Prediction

France is the absolute favorite, as we already said. Despite them being a bit slower and without the expected energy, they should beat Switzerland who is a solid unit but far from the Gauls’ level. Deschamps has superstars at each position which couldn’t be told for his counterpart on the other side, Vladimir Petkovic. So our final pick here is France to win.

Here are the betting previews for other EURO 2020 Round of 16 games:

  • Italy vs. Austria
  • Wales vs. Denmark
  • Netherlands vs. Czech Republic
  • Belgium vs. Portugal
  • Croatia vs. Spain
  • England vs. Germany
  • Sweden vs. Ukraine
