How Many Runs did the Angels Score Against the Rockies? 25 Runs!

June 25, 2023 By Kreighton R Leave a Comment

The Angels won in Colorado on Saturday. That alone is not exceptional. The Halos have an all-time record of 14-5 at Coors Field and were favored by the oddsmakers, so we knew they had a good chance to win. They didn’t just win.

Denver Post

This is a story because tonight the Angels doled out a 25-1 spanking, and the Rockies had to take it. They weren’t allowed to flex their butt cheeks.

25 runs is the most scored by a team this season – topping Toronto’s 20-run effort in Tampa last month. Tonight’s showcase by the Angels is the highest single-team run total since Toronto’s last breakout performance in July, 2022 when the Jays scored 28 runs.

Angels Make History with 25 Runs, Rockies Look to Bury Head in Sand

Putting up 25 runs in a baseball game is extremely rare. So rare, in fact, that the Angels franchise had never done it. The team also set a franchise record in hits with 28.

LA Times

Los Angeles has just become the 22nd MLB team to score 25 runs in a game since 1901. Here’s something even more historic: the previous record for fewest runs allowed in a 25-run outburst was 2, by the 1936 Giants. The Angels allowed 1 – making this arguably the best 25-run game ever.

As is often the case with high-scoring games in any sport, the team with the humongous lead will take their foot off the gas in the second half. That certainly happened Saturday night as the Angels had already scored 23 runs across the first 4 innings and then eked out just a couple more over the last 5 frames.

Per MLB.com, only 2 other teams in the history of the sport have ever scored more than 23 runs through 4 innings. These were the 1922 Cubs and the 1894 Pirates. Had the Angels kept up their scoring pace after the first 4 innings, they’d have scored 52 runs.

The Angels scored 25 runs in 9 innings but the Rockies managed just 1. Combined, 26 runs is a high total but not historically high. This is the 2nd-highest scoring game of 2023 (behind that Mexico City 17-13 game between San Diego and San Francisco).

We have now seen 11 such games in the post-COVID era. This one doesn’t even crack the top-5.

Who Had All of the Hits for the Angels in Their 25-Run Game?

We mentioned earlier that Los Angeles tallied 28 hits Saturday – the most in franchise history. Again, we only have to go back to the Blue Jays in July, 2022 to find the last time a team had more. The Jays had 29 hits that day.

Since the turn of the century, only tonight’s Angels, the 2022 Jays, and 3 other teams have ever totaled 28 hits in a contest. Since 1901, the all-time high for hits in a single game is 33. This was done by the 1932 Cleveland Indians in an 18-17 loss to Philadelphia that went 18 innings.

That’s two full baseball games. No wonder they set the all-time hits record. The record for hits in a 9-inning game is 31 by the 1992 Brewers versus Toronto. Man, it sure seems Toronto is always involved whenever record-setting numbers of runs or hits are achieved.

Every single starter recorded at least 1 hit for Los Angeles Saturday night. In fact, every single starter, except for one, recorded multiple hits. Guess who ruined it. Shohei Ohtani – the best baseball player in the world.

Ohtani had the worst day of any of the Angels hitters – going 1-7 with a mere single. This dropped his average below .300 on the year.

Two separate Angels went 5-5 on Saturday – Hunter Renfroe and Mickey Moniak. The RBI leader for the Halos was their 9-hitter David Fletcher. Fletcher was 4-6 with a 3-run homer and 5 RBIs.

Mickey Moniak hit 8th and Fletcher 9th. This means the bottom-2 guys in the Angels lineup were a combined 9-11 with 2 home runs, 9 RBIs, and 6 runs scored.

Mike Trout was amazing, per usual. He batted four times – going 3-3 with a homer and a walk – before being lifted for a pinch hitter.
