Juan Mata Saves Manchester United

November 8, 2018 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Once again, Jose Mourinho and his Manchester United refused to lay down their weapons, despite being in a hopeless situation. Juventus was demolishing them throughout the game, but in the end, the guests went home singing after they clawed their way back and won 1-2.

What a night it was in Turin, Italy. The clash of two titans if the European football really met the expectations, and the spectators went home with mixed emotions. The hero of the match for the guests was Juan Mata, who turned this event upside down after entering the pitch in the 79th minute. His goal got Manchester going in the right direction, and the Spanish international couldn’t have been more happier after the final whistle.

“What a nice last five minutes. It is a very good night for us to get three points against Juventus in Italy. It is amazing.

Juventus Started Better

And truly, it was a fine night for the Red Devils, but nothing indicated this outcome. Juventus was controlling everything on the pitch, right after the first whistle, and the hosts were doing everything in their power to make United feel uncomfortable. Cristiano Ronaldo made a superb volley, and gave the advantage to Juve, and for all of you who haven’t seen this situation, we strongly suggest to set aside one minute and watch it.
The Italian champions had many more opportunities. Paulo Dybala hit the post, Sami Khedira did the same thing, and it was the fortune in this case that saved Manchester from conceding a goal. Later on, Massimiliano Allegri’s team had two more chances through Pjanic and Cuadrado, but these two reacted poorly and failed to score. The latter one proved to be a person responsible for many bad things which happened to Juventus tonight. After not scoring, his tackle was the one which gave a chance to the visitors to change the flow of the game. Allegri was furious with the Columbian after the match.

“Angry with Cuadrado? More than anything else for the free kick from the edge awarded to Mata.”

Just seven minutes after he stepped on the grass of Allianz Stadium, Mata had a perfect position to show everybody that he still knows how to shoot free-kicks. Some 19 yards, through the middle of the goal. Szczesny, Juventus’ goalkeeper, didn’t stand a chance. It was 1-1.

The reaction still hadn’t settled down, when United scored once again. This time, it was after a set-piece, when the ball deflected from several players before ending in Juve’s net. According to the most relevant media, it was Leonardo Bonucci who scored an own goal, and made his fans disappointed. 1-2, for a true shock in Turin.

Mourinho vs. Fans

Things were also interesting off the court in the last couple of minutes. Jose Mourinho was constantly provoked by the home team fans throughout the clash. But in the end, we waited for his five minutes. The Portugues coach placed his hand near the ear and started making gestures like he can’t hear Juventus fans. In no time, Bonucci and Bentancur, were near him and the show began.

However, the former Inter Milan coach, with whom he won the famous Treble in 2010, didn’t want to talk about that in the press conference after the game. His topics were different, mostly about how good his opponents were.

“On a beautiful Italian day, I made a little thing. I know millions are happy with the win. But I respect Juventus and the quality they have. I am really proud of my boys because they did everything.” and continued. “Juventus have phenomenal players. That Cristiano Ronaldo goal was beautiful and the player [Leonardo Bonucci] that made that beautiful pass, is a central defender! They are a fantastic team with an amazing record at home.”

At the moment, Juventus is first in Group H with 9 points, United is second with 7, Valencia behind them with five, and Young Boys have only one.

The Red Devils are awaiting the Swiss champion in three weeks time, and Juve hosts Valencia.
