Liverpool Celebrates the Title With a 5-3 Win Over Chelsea

July 22, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Liverpool defeated Chelsea in a fantastic match at Anfield, which saw eight goals. The final result of this event was 5-3 for Klopp’s guys, who made Blues’ life much more complicated with this loss. On the other side, Liverpool’s players were handed the English Premier League trophy after this match.

Frank Lampard’s guys needed one point to secure their place in the Champions League next year, but they failed to get it. After Manchester United played just 1-1 at home against West Ham, Chelsea reached the situation in which they didn’t have to chase a victory at Anfield.

To be honest, Liverpool never allowed the guests to have that option, as they reached a three-goal lead in the first 43 minutes, completely outplaying their big rival.

Naby Keita in the 23rd, Alexander-Arnold in the 38th and Wijnaldum in the 43rd minute scored for the hosts. The first two goals were particularly beautiful.

Olivier Giroud decreased to 3-1 in the third minute of the stoppage time, bringing back some hope for the guests.

The second half started excellent for the new champions. Some 10 minutes into the period, Roberto Firmino would have scored after a nice header, to lif the Reds to 4-2, but this result wasn’t active for too long. To be exact, it lasted only six minutes.

Tammy Abraham used Christian Pulisic’s assist to make it 4-3. The American international stepped on the pitch two minutes earlier, and he immediately made an impact on the field.

He alone would have scored in the 73rd minute, after smashing the ball into the net from a nearby. That was when Chelsea tried to go for all or nothing because they needed that one point. The visitors increased the level of aggression but it didn’t bring them the desired outcome.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain solved the event in the 84th minute, putting an end on Chelsea’s hopes, and announcing the start of the big party for the hosts and the Reds’ fans all around the world.

“In match-play we were OK. They’re a fantastic team, and we can’t afford to make those mistakes. If we don’t concede a fifth, I thought we were coming,” said Lampard about the game. “We have to suck this in and accept it here tonight because it’s where we want to get to.”

His Chelsea awaits Wolverhampton in the final round, and they still need that one point to be safe when talking about the Champions League. That is because Leicester and Chelsea meet at King Power Stadium.

🗣 "Drink what you want, you have to prepare for a party when this b******t virus is gone"

Lampard mentioned that his team controls the situation and that they need to overcome the pressure and deal with it.

“It’s huge, we know the situation, it’s in our hands to get a result against a very good Wolves team. To get where we want to be, the pressure is what we should have.”

As for the Liverpool players, they were celebrating their well-deserved title, making the preparations for the trophy ceremony. This truly is a glorious night for them, after all the failures and disappointments they experienced over the years. They even managed to get some small revenge against Chelsea, who prevented them from taking the title much earlier.

Gerrard’s slip was something that haunted all the Reds’ fans for a long time. After tonight’s match, they will go away for sure.

Liverpool closes its glorious season in Newcastle in the last round.
