Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James Blow Out San Antonio Spurs, 129-102

February 4, 2020 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

The Los Angeles Lakers have trashed the San Antonio Spurs at their Staples Center this Tuesday night with 129-102. The purple and gold had LeBron James, who led his team to its 38th victory of the season, with yet another fantastic offensive performance.

LeBron dropped 36 points, had 9 assists, 7 rebounds, shooting 12-for-20 from the floor. He was excellent from downtown, hitting six threes in nine attempts. The crowd at the Staples was in ecstasy once LBJ scored five three-pointers in some three minutes during the fourth period. He would drop three of them in a row.

“I was just trying to take what the defense gave me,” said James. “Trying to press the envelope a little bit, see if I had a hand and a teammates found me, and I was able to knock down.”

LeBron goes 5-5 from deep in a 3-minute span, including triples on 3 consecutive possessions❗️

After losing a tight contest against the Los Angeles Clippers last night, Gregg Popovich’s side didn’t have enough power to stand up to the Lakers who had an excellent shooting night.

There was no thrill in this one, as the Lakers confidently took over the control of the flow during the second period, slowly creating the advantage which stood at 10 points at the halftime, 51-41. That would extend to 78-59 with 3:42 until the end of the third, followed by a slight push of the guests from Texas, who would eventually give up from chasing the Lakers early in the fourth.

Although having a solid shooting percentage in that final period, the Spurs couldn’t handle Lakers’ superb offensive performance. In those 12 minutes alone, LAL was 16-for-24 from the field, hitting 8 threes. In general, Vogel’s guys posted 59% of made shots tonight. The Lakers’ coach spoke about LeBron’s shooting night, saying that LBJ can shoot whenever he wants.

“He’s got the ultimate green light to shoot,” he said. “You know he has a great job of picking his spots.”

Besides LeBron, Lakers also had Anthony Davis and Kyle Kuzma with solid performances. Kuz dropped 18 with 12 boards and 4 assists, missing three of his 10 shots. Meanwhile, AD scored the same number of points, with 5 boards. But he played very good defense on Spurs’ LaMarcus Aldridge, who ended the night with 7 points in 30 minutes.

“Just keeping DeRozan and LaMarcus on the free-throw line for the majority of the game,”James explained the tactics for slowing down the Spurs. “Trying to close out their three-point shooters, knowing they were coming off a back-to-back.”

Among the visitors from Texas, apart from DeMar DeRozan, everybody was quiet. The Compton-native dropped 28 points with nine rebounds and seven assists, looking good. Bryn Forbes was had 13, and Dejuonte Murray 12 points, and that was about it from the guests.

Believe it or not, the Spurs had just 27 rebounds in this match, while on the other side, the Lakers posted 57, more than double. The LAL officially swept the Spurs in their regular-campaign series this season. After beating them twice in San Antonio, they’ve posted the third win tonight.

Lakers (38-11) await the Houston Rockets in two days, before heading for San Francisco to meet the Golden State Warriors. After that, they will host the Phoenix Suns, and visit Denver.

The Spurs (22-28) have six more games on the road. The first one is against the Trail Blazers this Thursday. Afterwards they have clashes in Sacramento, Denver, Oklahoma City, Utah, and Oklahoma again.
