Lynn After Chargers’ Loss: “We Got Outplayed Today”

December 23, 2018 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

The Los Angeles Chargers lost what might be their most important game of the regular part of the season. Philip Rivers and the rest of the crew, were stopped last night at their Dignity Health Sports Park with 22-10.

They simply didn’t have the answer for a ferocious defensive team of the guests.

“Well we’ve got outcoached today, and we got outplayed” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn opened the press conference. “They played their game. We couldn’t get them off the field on defense, and we couldn’t stay on the field on offense”

Coach Lynn was telling the absolute truth, as the Ravens dominated on both sides of the field.

Philip Rivers finished the first game this season in which he didn’t have a touchdown pass. He had a season-low 181 passing yards, 23 of 37 and two interceptions.

But not only that. Ravens’ defense sacked him four times, forcing him to lose 34 yards.

“I just give them credit, they did a heck of a job” Chargers’ QB said about rivals defense at the postgame conference.

Melvin Gordon came back, and he had 41 rushing yards, and the whole team had 51 in total. That is more than three times as less as Baltimore had, 159 yards.

Meanwhile, Lamar Jackson didn’t have any troubles during this game. The youngster tossed for 204 yards and one TD pass. He connected Mark Andrews for a 68-yard score, setting his longest TD pass in the career.

“We turned it over so it was up to us to go back down and score,” Jackson told. “It was play action. Mark got open and made a great catch.”

The last pick of the first round in this year’s NFL Draft imposed himself as the dominant force in Baltimore’s attack, and it seems that Joe Flacco’s days are definitely numbered here in Maryland.

“I’m used to playing on big stages and people doubting us. I try to prove them wrong,” said Jackson, who won five of his six games as a starter. “We can play with anyone. That was a great team. We can fight and everyone sees it now.”

A decisive moment of the entire match happened with 2:26 before the end of the final quarter. Chargers were brought back 10 yards after receiving a penalty for offensive holding. It was first-and-20, and Antonio Gates managed to win 11 yards before fumbling the football. Tavon Young took the ball and scored a return touchdown 62 yards long, lifting the guests to 22-10.

After that, there was a little hope for LA, and even that was destroyed after Rivers’ long pass to Travis Benjamin, which was intercepted in the end zone by Marlon Humphrey, the 2nd season cornerback from Alabama.

The situation is not bright for the Chargers (11-4). They had a chance to win the AFC West, and to clinch the AFC No.1 seed. It would give them an edge in the playoffs, because of the home ground advantage. Now they have to wait and see the result from Seattle and hope that the Seahawks have enough strength to triumph, which would bring them back into the race.

Next week they will be traveling to Denver, to face the unpredictable Broncos.

Baltimore is still holding to that last wild-card spot in the AFC. If they manage to defeat the Browns in the ultimate game of the regular part of the season, there is a high probability for these two sides to meet again in the wild-card round. But if the Steelers lose one match until the end, the game could be played at M&T Bank Stadium. In that case, the Ravens would be the division champs.

So, all went wrong for Chargers who now have to regroup and find a way to forget this loss as soon as possible.
