Magic Johnson: “Me and LeBron had a Plan”

June 29, 2019 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Things are not going to be easy for Jeanie Buss anytime soon. After a successful period, when Lakers managed to acquire Anthony Davis through a trade with the New Orleans Pelicans, the controlling owner of the purple and gold got in one pretty nasty situation.

It appears that she will have to cooperate with Magic Johnson once again. And this time, against her own will.

Allegedly, Kawhi Leonard requested to speak with both Buss and Magic as a part of the negotiation with the Lakers. We all know that LAL wants to land the Claw, who is undoubtedly the best two-way player in the league. The fans, the organization, and the team is craving for the third superstar, and Kawhi would be a perfect fit because he is the biggest name in this free agency.

It is essential for the Lakers franchise to reach an agreement with the two-time NBA Finals MVP because that would give a huge swing to their championship ambitions.

Magic Johnson says he will help the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency in any way he can, but he is not permitted by NBA rules to be part of official team meetings with prospective free agents. Johnson said he has not been asked by the Lakers or owner Jeanie Buss to participate.

However, Kawhi’s request for this meeting is something nobody expected.

We all know what happened earlier this year when Magic decided to leave his position in the Lakers’ organization. And what happened afterward.

A few days ago, Jeanie Buss decided to talk about that at the NBA award ceremony, and back up Rob Pelinka, who was labeled by Magic as the most cynical person in the entire story. Ever since his stepping down, Johnson hasn’t had any ties with the organization.

However, that is about to change if they want Kawhi.

“A friend of mine called and says Kawhi wants to meet with you,” Johnson told this Friday. “I said no problem. I’m available if that’s what this man wants.”

For now, he didn’t receive any calls from the franchise. Whether is that a sign that they aren’t willing to accept him taking part in this deal or something else we will see. Also, the rules are preventing Magic to be a part of any official meeting with the player. However, he is free to engage in any unofficial part of the negotiations.

Johnson clearly stated that he isn’t trying to interfere in any moves LAL franchise makes, or to do something he isn’t supposed to.

“I got a great life. I want to stick to that great life,” Johnson said. “I’m not trying to mess with anybody’s job.”

Kawhi’s uncle adores Magic Johnson and has a strong relationship with him.

Magic likely quit to tamper. Period. https://t.co/xizfc5ZL5K

The five-time champions stated that he only wants to help, for several reasons. This is his team, where he spent the entire career, and became what he is today. But one reason stands above others for him personally. That is his promise to LeBron that he would make him a championship team. Before LBJ joined the Lakers, he a Magic spoke, and during those conversations, the old legend gave his word about surrounding James with top players who will help him take his fourth ring.

“He signed knowing I was here,” Johnson said of James. “That we had a plan. He knew he had a big brother in me as well. He could run things by me. He can still do that.”

Just knowing that there is a chance for Kawhi to land in LA after Anthony Davis’ arrival makes all the purple and gold fans go crazy. Because of that, Magic is ready to do anything in order for the Claw to sign a deal.

It would make this superteam arguably one of the best in history, with three of the most dominant players in their positions at one place.

We’ll see what happens here.
