New England Smashes Pittsburgh Even Without Antonio Brown, Pats Win 33-3

September 9, 2019 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

The New England Patriots have defeated Pittsburgh Steelers with 33-3 at the start of the 100th NFL season. Even without Antonio Brown who didn’t make his debut now, the reigning champions have showcased their strength and demolished one of the biggest rivals.

Everything was already decided up until the halftime when the Pats had a 20-0 lead. As we said this was the 100th season of NFL football, and it was also 20th for Tom Brady, who despite his age isn’t slowing down.

One of the best players of all times threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns, completing 24 of his 36 attempts. His main targets were Philip Dorsett, Julius Edelman, and Josh Gordon. Dorsett ended the game with two TDs, while Gordon added one.

“Well, he’s the best in the world,” Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said about his colleague from the opposite side. “There’s a reason he’s the best when he’s out there doing his thing.”

Brady hit Gordon for 20 yards with 4:46 left in the opening quarter, for the first touchdown in this campaign. Stephen Gostkowski made two field goals in the second quarter, and Brady connected with Dorsett for 25 yards, which gave the champs a colossal lead already at the break.

Pittsburgh’s team wasn’t even near the expected level, which especially applies to Roethlisberger who had 276 yards completing 27 of 47 attempts and was picked up once. Most of that yardage was made during the garbage time. The Steelers had just 31 rushing yards in this one, with James Conner carrying the ball 10 times for 21 yards. Their head coach Mike Tomlin congratulated to the rival, saying that his team wasn’t ready for such a challenge at the moment.

“Part of that is just acknowledging, we weren’t’ ready for prime time tonight,” he added. ” We got to bet back to the drawing board. We won’t go undefeated; we’re on and 1.”

A lot of talking after the match was about Antonio Brown. The controversial wide receiver was one of the icons of the Steelers’ fans for a long time. Now he ended up in Foxborough after a turbulent and short episode in Oakland, where he didn’t play a single game. In general, nobody wanted to spend too much attention to the Pats newest addition.

Coach Bill Belichick even interrupted one of the journalists who tried to ask him about AB. The same situation was with Roethlisberger who also didn’t want to pay too much of attention to his former teammate.

On the other side, Tomlin stated that last night’s loss has nothing to do with Brown, and that his focus is on the current team, not the past.

“I’m not specifically worried about anything relevant to Brown, I’m worried about the guys in our locker room and the quality of our execution in what we did and didn’t do,” Tomlin said. “Antonio has been off our team for a number of months; we moved on from that stuff in March.”

Before the start of the match, the home team unveiled their sixth championship banner, in honor of defeating the Los Angeles Rams in the last Super Bowl. The Pats were better than Sean McVay’s crew with 13-3, and won their sixth title.

They will be chasing a back-to-back this year, and they are the last team who achieved that, back in 2003 and 2004.

The Pats are heading for Miami next to play against the Dolphins who suffered a huge beating against the Baltimore Ravens yesterday, 59-10.

On the other side, the Steelers will try to bounce back against the Seattle Seahawks at home. Pete Carroll’s guys defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in the opener, after a tough battle with 21-20.
