Nick Foles and Tyreek Hill Injured, Chiefs Rout Jaguars in Jacksonville, 40-26

September 8, 2019 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

The Kansas City Chiefs have started their new NFL campaign with a win on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Patrick Mahomes and the boys were better with 40-26, but have lost Tyreek Hill due to injury.

On the other side, the Jags lost their starting quarterback, Nick Foles who apparently broke his clavicle and injured his shoulder. The injury came while Foles threw a touchdown pass to DJ Clark, and suffered a severe hit by Chris Jones. Following that contact, the former Super Bowl MVP didn’t come back to the field anymore. Up until that point, Foles was 5 of 8 for 75 yards and the above-mentioned TD.

The Jags also lost rookie LB Quincy Williams, and it seems that this season definitely started badly for them.

Chiefs quickly reached a 10-0 lead, through Sammy Watkins who had a 68-yard pass from Mahomes and with a 28-yard field-goal Harrison Butker made. The hosts responded, but Watkins once more caught a touchdown pass, this time for 49-yards.

The 26-year old, had a career-high 198 receiving yards in 9 receptions, and three TDs. It was by far his best performance in KC. As a reason for such a super show in the season premiere, Watkins labeled a great offseason, in which he worked hard and also had some time to “clear his mind.”

“I’ve had a great offseason, couple vacations with my wife, my kids, kinda clear my mind.”

Meanwhile, Patrick Mahomes was instrumental as always, but he too had troubles. During the second period, the NFL MVP had to go out because of his left ankle after a solid beating by the Jags’ defense. He would come back eventually and pick up where he left. In the end, Mahomes had 378 yards, three TDs and threw 25 of 33.

“He showed poise like he do every game,” sais Watkins about his QB. “I think he got that leadership mentality, and he just got to continue to lead this team like he always been doing.”

Jacksonville’s back up quarterback, Gardner Minshew did an excellent job as a replacement. He didn’t complete just two of his 25 throws, and reached 275 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Minshew, a 23-year old from Washington St, picked in 6th round of this draft as a 178th pick, will probably have to replace Foles for at least few games, and if he plays like today, it could be a huge plus in his resume.

He found Dede Westbrook for 15 yards and Chris Conley for 21, but that wasn’t enough to stop the Chiefs. Leonard Fournette recorded his first fumble as a pro after three seasons. Jaguars’ running back had 66 yards, without a TD.

Also, Myles Jack received an ejection after hitting Chiefs WR Demarcus Robinson and after causing huge trouble on the field and incidents.

The newcomer among the Chiefs LeSean McCoy had a nice debut with 81 rushing yards on 10 carries, the longest one 31 yards. It appears that the former Buffalo Bills adjusted just perfectly to Andy Reid’s philosophy and that he might contribute a lot during this season.

When looking at the game in general, Jags weren’t that bad but the early injury Fols suffered definitely interrupted their game plan. They weren’t inferior in any aspect of the game, and the only thing where Chiefs had an advantage was the turnovers, as they didn’t commit a single one, while Jacksonville had 2.

Up next, the Jags travel to Houston, while Chiefs head to Oakland to face the Raiders. It is going to be very interesting to see the old rivalry once again. Especially with the Raiders in a position like this when Antonio Brown left the team.
