Premier League News – Liverpool’s Missed Chance, Chelsea’s Shame

January 30, 2019 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

The whole 24th round of the Premiership is now complete, after today’s four remaining games ended. And to be perfectly honest with you, these matches were fantastic to watch today.

Liverpool played only 1-1 with Leicester City, and dropped an ideal chance to increase the gap between them and Manchester City in the standings. With this point, the Reds have 61, Sky-Blues 56.

The hosts opened the game very confidently and reached the lead after only three minutes. Sadio Mane scored and set the crowd on fire on a snowy and chilly night. But shortly after, the noise was gone, as Liverpool stopped being dominant on the field. The guests focused on counter-attacks, and they did have several chances before Harry Maguire equalized in the last moments of the first half.

The same result stayed in the end, with the note that Liverpool’s attacks were not as dangerous as Foxes’ counters.

One very questionable call of the referee Martin Atkinson marked this contest. He didn’t award a clear penalty for the leaders after Ben Chilwell brought down Naby Keita in the box.

Jurgen Klopp was mad about it after the game.

“It was probably the clearest penalty situation we have had. The ref was in the best position on the pitch. You will have to ask him why he didn’t give a penalty.” said the German manager.

Chelsea experienced one of their worst defeats in the last couple of years. Bournemouth absolutely trashed the Blues, scoring all of their four goals in the second halftime. Joshua King was the central figure on the field, because of his two hits, while Davis Brooks and Charlie Daniels scored one apiece.

Many fans expected to see a much shaper Chelsea upfront, with the newest addition Gonzalo Higuain who came from Milan. It turned out to be a performance which needs to be forgotten as quickly as possible.

The Blues had almost every statistical parameter better than rivals, but their attack was very pale, which is the main reason why they couldn’t score. On the other side, the Cherries built huge confidence throughout the match and used every chance they had.

“That has got to be up there as one of my best results,” told Bournemouth’s manager, and probably the best English coach at the moment, Eddie Howe.

“It was a big night for us and it is great to do it here in front of our own fans.”

With this loss, Chelsea slipped down to the position no.5, with the same number of points as Arsenal, 47.

Tottenham has 54, and the Spurs profited the most from this odd round.

Mauricio Pochettino was very pleased with the way his players finished the meeting with Watford. After being down at the halftime, 0-1, the hosts changed everything in the last 10 minutes. At first, Son scored in the 80th minute for 1-1, and then Fernando Llorente caused for an eruption of joy among the fans at Wembley. The experienced striker netted a game-winner in the 87th minute, providing maybe the most important three points of the season.

The Spaniard is playing very well since he jumped in to replace injured Harry Kane. Pochettino mentioned the importance of his today’s goal.

“I’m very happy for him. With the possibility to play he will help the team and that goal today is massive.” the Argentinian told reporters.

In the last game, Southampton and Crystal Palace split one point apiece, in the game which ended 1-1.
