Tom Brady, Cam Newton Sign New Deals With Tampa Bay, New England

March 12, 2021 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

One former and one current New England Patriots quarterback clinched his respective deal today. Tom Brady signed an extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while further up north, Cam Newton and the Pats agreed to another one-year deal.

Brady Restructures the Deal, Stays in TB Through 2022

Tom Brady and the Bucs signed a four-year extension that voids down to one year, making the salary-cap more flexible for the franchise from Florida. Brady will stay in Tampa Bay until 2022, but the entire deal saves more than $19 million of the Bucs’ money in this year alone.

Brady decided to work out such a deal in order to keep as many teammates as possible on the team, and provide himself yet another chance for adding one more Super Bowl trophy to his unreal collection.

There is a lot of talent currently at the Raymond James Stadium, but all these players have a big reputation, and it is logical for them to be paid in accordance with it. The free agency didn’t start yet, yet a few of them are already on the radar of multiple teams interested in strengthening their respective rosters and weakening Tampa’s.

As for Brady, this is another confirmation that he wasn’t kidding once, saying that he plans to play until 45 years. He will be 44 next season, but judging by the way the seven-time champ performed during the 2020 campaign, he has at least two more years in his hands.

Brady set numerous records, finishing the regular part of the season with 4,633 yards and 40 touchdown passes, the second-best in the league. His passing rating was 102.2.

Even though the Buccaneers didn’t have the start as everyone expected, as time went by, they lifted the form, eventually hitting full speed in the playoffs once they smashed all opponents.

Newton Going Back to Foxborough

Cam Newton and the Pats will try one more time to reach the playoffs. Following last year’s disappointing experience, the team from Foxborough decided to give Newton one more chance.

The deal could go up to $14 million with the note that $6 million are incentives. The 32-year old QB didn’t have a nice ride in his first season with the Pats, suffering various disappointments as the campaign went by. New England ended the year with seven wins and nine losses, without reaching the postseason for the first time since 2008.

What was a massive problem for Bill Belichick’s side was the fact that they had a couple of big-time players out for the year due to the COVID-19 virus. Also, Newton’s receiving corps was mediocre, and in the majority of the situations, he didn’t have proper targets, which is why he had to run himself. The injuries were constantly troubling the Patriots, who already had a shortened rotation due to opt-outs.

Newton threw 2,657 yards for 8 TDs and 10 picks. Though, he would run for 592 yards on 137 carries for 12 touchdowns, the second-best in his career.

It seems that the team will be in a much better position coming into the 2021 season. That would open various options on the field for Super Cam, who showed on several occasions last year that he still has what it takes to compete at the highest possible level.
