Tottenham Sacks Jose Mourinho, Reportedly Because of the Super League

April 19, 2021 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

After 17 months in charge at Tottenham Hotspur, Jose Mourinho is sacked. The reasons for this action remain undisclosed, but some sources from England suggest that it has something to do with the Super League.

Less than 24 hours since powerful and rich teams announced their intention to form the Super League, which will change the football system as we know it, Spurs released their manager.

Per sources from London, Mourinho declined to go out on the pitch and execute a training session, disagreeing with Tottenham’s plans to join the Super League. There hasn’t been any confirmation nor denial from either party, which leaves enough space for various speculations.

“The club can today announce that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff Joao Sacramento, Nuno Santos, Carlos Lalin and Giovanni Cerra have been relieved of their duties,” the Spurs wrote in a released statement.

There hasn’t been any other official information regarding Mourinho’s departure. Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy added that the Portuguese led the team in challenging times and that he enjoyed working with him.

Some suggest that Mourinho’s struggles to make a big result are the main reason for the sack, but that story is a bit knowing that Tottenham plays the EFL Cup finals against Manchester City in the next few days. It is odd to sack the manager before such an important match, explaining that the reasons are poor results.

To be honest, the Spurs didn’t play as expected this year, suffering elimination in the Europa League to Dinamo Zagreb in the round of 16, despite a 2-0 lead in the first game. Also, they are currently seventh in the English Premier League, five points away from the fourth spot that leads to the UEFA Champions League.

But still, there was enough time for the season to be saved, and the Spurs were just one step away from getting another trophy, the first since 2008. Knowing Mourinho and his mentality, the chances of upsetting Manchester City, were high, particularly because of the Citizens’ recent defeat in the FA Cup semis.

Mourinho’s future is unclear right now, but knowing the Portuguese, he might be in the combination for another job pretty soon. The only question is where. We expect to hear from him anytime today and listen to his side of the story.

The English media is trying to get more information on this case, but so far, they haven’t heard back from Mourinho, even though numerous reporters tried to get in touch with him. The fans are shocked and angry at the board and many of them who began protesting this morning because of the decision to join the Super League have an extra reason to display their outrage.

This Monday morning has been hot in the soccer community, with four big teams declining the offer from the Super League to join. Bayern Munich, PSG, Borussia Dortmund, and Porto have all answered negatively to the proposal to become the members of the new competition.

Spanish, Italian, and English FA are to have meetings today, and some of them might see the founding clubs banned from their system. FIFA and UEFA already indicated that they would take certain actions against all those who join the Super League. The clubs will be banned from the competitions, and the players won’t be able to appear at the international competitions.
