Warriors’ GM on Free Agency: “I Don’t Get Upset”

February 5, 2019 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

We are witnessing the start of one of the most interesting free agencies in the last decade. Although we have a long way to go until the summer, there are already speculations and rumors about some specific moves and desires of certain players.

The Golden State Warriors are going to be in the middle of every story as they have three superstars who can leave the team at the end of the season.

DeMarcus Cousins, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant.

Just by seeing these names, you get excited, but imagine if one of them, or even all, leave Oakland next season. What kind of earth-rocking moves would that be?

Bob Myers, Golden State’s general manager isn’t concerned because of the upcoming period, and the fact that half of the league is aiming at least one of these three guys.

“I don’t get upset,” Myers stated when asked about the possible departure of some players, “It’s a competitive league. I’ve got great respect for all the other teams. That’s what they’re supposed to do, right?

He was talking with the media yesterday morning about the future of several players, particularly Kevin Durant. One of the reporters asked him how he sees the current situation and what are his thoughts at the moment.

According to Myers, there is no room for any fear, and that he strongly believes that all GSW’s players are happy in the Bay Area.

“I feel like all our players are happy and want to stay with us and continue with us,” Myers said, but added that his experience is not that big in the current position and that he gets along much better in the role of an agent.

“That’s how I feel. But again, I’ve only worked in the NBA as an agent

The reasons for these topics in the moments when half of the season just passed by, are the constant attempts of other teams to recruit Warriors’ players.

Several days before the game between GSW and the New York Knicks, one marketing company from the Big Apple ordered a big billboard with Porzingis and Durant. That was all the way back in October. Recently, the Unicorn got traded to Dallas, and the salary cap space of the Knicks rose to the ceiling.

KD’s manager is a lifelong fan of New York, whose goal is to be the boss of this franchise. All this is making GSW fans unease, and worried. Especially after Durant’s and Green’s incident.

The similar situation is with Klay Thompson, who has been a target of the Lakers for a long time. One of the best shooters ever, will no doubt get a better contract that the current in Oakland, and his father won several titles in LA during his stint there.

On top of everything, when Warriors hosted Lakers several days ago, a group of LA fans chanted “We want Thompson.” Many saw that as a way of recruitment.

For Myers that is a legit way of dealing business in the NBA, and also an act of recognition for the team.

“I grew up where we would be chanting wanting Lakers players,” Myers said. “So I guess that’s a good place to be in.”

The one thing nobody notices is the fact that GSW also has the possibility of adding new players if the old ones go. And when you look at the list of available free agents during this summer, it is clear that we might see another blockbusting move to California.

Myers spoke about that and also about the problems which the team has when participating in the deep playoff stages, which later reflect on the free agency period. If they play in the finals, there wouldn’t be much time to prepare for the draft and the market.

“If we’re fortunate enough to keep playing and finish in June, there’s probably seven days before the draft and 12 before free agency. That’s unique to our sport, so you really have to do your work in that small period.” Warriors GM said.

With Steph Curry on board, there is no doubt that even if all three superstars leave Oakland, the new ones will gladly come to Oracle Arena to pursuit the titles with him.

But we are pretty sure that at least one is going to stay. And that the GSW will be the biggest contender for the title anyway.
