Marketa Vondrousova Wins the Wimbledon, Defeats Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-4

July 15, 2023 By Nikola Velickovic Leave a Comment

Marketa Vondrousova is the 2023 Wimbledon champion, as she defeated Ons Jabeur in the finals, 6-4, 6-4. This is the first Grand Slam title for the 24-year-old Czech player, who came to London as an underdog and became the first lady in the Open Era to win the title as an unseeded participant.

“I don’t know what is happening – it is an amazing feeling,” said Vondrousova. “After everything I’ve been through, it’s amazing I can stand here and hold this.”

She had a rough two years, with all sorts of injuries hitting Marketa and forcing her to even make a long pause due to wrist surgeries she had to undergo. In 2019, the Czech player reached the Roland Garros finals, where she lost to Ashleigh Barty. At the time, Vondrousova was considered one of the biggest talents in the sport, but all the health issues slowed down her quest toward the top.

Yet, following today’s victory, all that is behind the 42nd player in the world. She was confident against the favorite, beating Jabeur in straight sets, thus creating one of the greatest sensations in recent history.

The match didn’t start well for the Czech lady, who lost her first serving game; however, she responded well, immediately evening the score on Jaberu’s serve and proceeding as if nothing had happened. Jabeur took another jab at her rival, with one more break, but after that, Vondrousova won four games in a row to win the first sequence of the finals.

The same happened in the second set, with four break points in the opening five games. The roller coaster at the central court of the All England Club was stopped in the 10th game, when Vondrousova used her second game, set, match and championship point, to take the title and make Jabeur cry.

“This is very, very tough. The most painful loss of my career” said the Moroccan player who was on the verge of becoming the first Arab woman to win the Grand Slam title. This was her third loss in the Grand Slam finals, the second in a row here in London, where she lost to Elena Rybakina last year. Previously, she couldn’t beat Iga Swiatek at the US Open finals.

Vondrousova came to Wimbledon with 11 wins and 11 losses on the grass surface, which is maybe the worst record on this turf for one champion in both competitions. As of this Monday, she will jump 32 places in the WTA rankings, taking the 10th spot.

The final touches…

Jabeur is left in despair again, but the Moroccan player still has enough time to make things right and win the Grand Slam title. Obviously, she has enough qualities for such an achievement. She is one of the most beloved players in the ladies’ tour, nicknamed the “Minister of Happiness” because of her cheerful and positive attitude.

Up next, we have a short break before the start of the American tour, which will see the players moving to the North American continent. But before that happens, we have one more spectacle at Wimbledon, and that’s the gents’ finals featuring Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic.

The Serb is after his record-tying eight titles at the All England Club, while Alcaraz searches for his first. You can reach the exclusive preview for this event here on this link.
